Just went out and found a cicada exoskeleton on the wheelbarrow tire. Fairly common site to find them on tree trunks as they molt during the night. I searched the area and found the adult. IMG_2830.JPG IMG_2829.JPG
For those that dont know this is the insect that makes the buzzing noise during hot Summer days.
I love nature...except when it calls!

We have them down here in East Texas also. When I was growing up we called them locust, katydids and cicadas. I'm sure there are some differences in each but we used all the names to describe them when they were making their summer sounds. The old timers would say that daytime time buzzing are cicadas, then katydids and crickets take over the night hours.

Pretty amazing creature. We have a few here but in some areas you can't hear yourself think they get so many.

I can typically find a dozen of those at any given time. I just pulled one out of the pool and sat him in the sun. He was lucky...

Heard them lots and seen a few over the past several years at the cottage in the Ottawa Valley but I mentioned just last weekend that I hadn't heard them yet this year. Funny as it's been an extra hot summer here.

When I was a kid, we’d make a game of who could find the most sheds.
Ever held a live one loosely in your closed hand and it make the buzzing sound? Feels like you’re being electrocuted. Lol

In my 57 yrs on this earth, I have found many sheds. Last night on our step handrail, I got to see a special treat. 0728202244.jpg 0728202245a.jpg 0728202245.jpg 0728202247.jpg 0728202251.jpg 0728202301.jpg It was so cool to watch. Would have been something to see it from the beginning.

I called them locusts til a couple years ago. Locusts look like a grasshoppers.

I think quite a few people call cicadas locusts. Maybe just the periodical ones.
First Summer with no annual cicadas singing from the trees. Seems kinda odd with this hot weather not to have cicadas singing.
