You would if a two year old and a 6 year old were screaming at you.

Czed I hope you didn't misinterpret my post.

I think it's great that the cat had the surgery, both for the cat, and the kids.

But Chazsbetterhalf and I have been in debt for the better part of 20 years, and could not justify the expense.

It has come at a cost.. but the 2 dogs we've lost wouldn't have survived this long even with $$$ intervention.

We now have money in savings, and are in the best position of our relationship.

After our last dog had to be put down, I didn't want any more pets because of the loss, and I also felt that we were financially inadequate.

    Not a good feeling.

Yu can only do what you can do within your constraints. As long as they don't suffer, that is the main thing. I could see Smokey's situation going either way, but am really glad he got the second chance.

My doctor admitted to me he spent thousands on his wife 15 yr old cat! I didn't ask the outcome. My daughter spent $4000 on a dog in two days only to end up euthanizing it at the end of day two. After all the heroic efforts, the vet said the recovery would be long term and the quality of life would be painful and even more costly.

Sometimes it's better to let them go
a woman at work has a nephew that has 16000.00
Or more in a older dog keeping it alive
Quality of life cannot be good sometimes for suffering animals.

    No it's not being heartless
Such as the same nephew had a feral cat come in
Squalling nonstop with a horrible disease
    Think exposed skull etc.
He put it down and ended it's suffering.

Yep. No kids here but I spent more that that on William in March when we found out he had end stage kidney failure. Our pups are our kids.

That's the tough part of having pets. At some point in every ones lives, you need to weigh to good days to bad days. When the bad outweighs the good ones, it's time to not think of yourself and do what's best. Suffering on the part of the pet is not acceptable to allow you "comfort".

Ok, I don't want to think of this again for a while.

So not to dwell on a sad subject but my pack is aging and I've been thinking about this subject. What do you do when one member of the pack dies? Do they just disappear as far as the rest know or do you make sure the others can see the body. I'm pretty sure most animals can recognize death.

    That's a tough question

If you have to take the dog to the veterinarian, then I think it would be difficult.

However if it passes at home, I'm sure the rest of the pack would notice.

Not sure if there's really any right answer

If at all possible I plan to bury my friends myself, even if euthanasia at the vet.

My tomcat was inside when the other cat was run over
    He never saw her.
My neighbor found her and texted me
    I buried her immediately
But even though he's a silent cat they both were.
Never meows or anything he did so loudly
As i was digging the grave
He was walking my 5 acres looking for the other
    One I'm certain of it.
That's just my opinion who knows but in three year's he's been virtually silent.

I let animals see body and say goodbye, it seems strange but a friend put 1 down once without that part and 2nd dog looked for it for years.

I can't even imagine the work and responsibility of owning and taking proper care of a horse. Here in Maine, the winters are long and cold, fields are deep in snow. Can't imagine an animal in a dimly lit barn in below freezing temperatures month after month. Only interaction is when it gets fed. I'll stick with dogs and cats. Leave the big animals to the pros. who know to handle them.
