Just over the property line adjacent to mine there are a couple hickory trees. Lately the nuts have been raining down onto my grass. I got curious, cracked one open and ate one. Tasted like nothing I’d willingly try again. Maybe it’s because they’re not ripe yet? Either way, the shape of the nut is throwing me off with the Google search. What do you guys think? Shagbark? Pignut? Bitternut?
based on the bark i say bitternut, but they may be right with mockernut. Cant say ive ever seen one of those though other than the forum.
Here in Ohio shellbark hickory when mature can get that flakey bark like shagbark. Guessing one or the other.
Not shaggy at all compared to the few shags Ive seen around here. Those shags made it absolutely obvious...
Very little meat in it at this point. Very bitter too. It was as pleasant as a mouthful of baking soda
