Just grabbed this at the dump. Was a yard tree(s) taken down yesterday. Wife and granddaughter went along, and I doubt it took much more than 30 minutes to get what we did. They were loading as fast as I could cut.
Only real reason I grabbed it is because of the cool bark. Gonna try making some Swedish candles out of some of it.
So what is it & is it any good for more than shoulder season and candles??? 87112CBE-8394-4E82-AF13-EC41F1D83CCD.jpeg 44A4B7EB-FABB-4D30-84D5-BAB7638770E8.jpeg 63CC3D5D-E5E4-458F-9B05-997CB72C8A54.jpeg D9D65424-E842-46AB-9526-6D1B82457A78.jpeg A97D8582-8D97-4E2C-BBC4-A2E99BB5AFD0.jpeg

Not to often. Any thing worth getting gets snapped up in a couple days. I do check almost daily but probably only a couple really small scores since I joined here. This was by far the biggest score out there. I seen this one headed out and the bark was so unusual I had to try it. I figured it was a birch of some sort, never had any before.

Cool! Always fun to score a new wood youve never had before...or in my case its a nightmare to hand split then you wish you never took it!

Birch, the bark that you see pealing makes a good fire starter, burns almost like a flammable plastic.

BTU are high, it’s good wood.

Split it now and keep it protected from the rain and snow. Birch has a tendency to rot very very fast if it is wet.

It does dry out on the faster side.

    Yes, Now.
Birch will rot in one year with the bark on.

100% river birch. Scored some last year. Only took half a truck load. Wish i took more. Dries very fast and burns hot. I use it for outdoor fires because i heard the pitch in the bark can foul up stovepipes.

I'd think if it's dried properly, it should be fine

Yep, birch, get it split right away and stack bark up other wise it will be a pile mush inside a sleeve of bark by fall.
