Hi Everyone! Been a while. Went a little nuts this spring stocking up on quick drying wood after I realized how much we burned in March and April since we were home full time (April was also 7-8* below normal). Anyone else have a bit more stocked up this year in prep? My university already said we will be remote in the fall (baring a vaccine I bet the spring as well) so I'm planning on an extra 1-2 cords will be burned.
I have wood racks. If they are empty, I want to fill them. More than past years? Nope. Just keeping the racks full. 3-4 cords/yr. On the 3ry plan.
Yea I really just started hoarding the past two years. Planned on about 3 cords a year and already have that for next year. From Oct - March 1st we only burned about 2 cords and $160 worth of oil (oil when we were away for holidays, vacations, skiing, etc). Stove only burned afternoon - early morning when we were home. Then March - April we did almost 1.25 since we have the stove running 24/7.
I have 2.5 cords of maple that is ready to burn, plus a half cord of ash, walnut and cherry in case I need to stretch it. I also have a chunk bin in case I have a real emergency, or if I know someone in need when the temp starts to drop. The 8+ cords (and counting) of red oak that is slowly closing in on me in my back yard is at various stages of seasoning. I won't start dipping into that until fall 2021. And while I'm at it, I'm hoping with every fiber of my being that 2021 is substantially less of a dumpster fire than this crappy year has been.
We burn a ton of wood heating house, basement, garage and shop. 8-10 cord depending on species and winter. I'm probably close to enough for 20-21, I'd like to get back to being ahead again. If our weather holds, it should be possible this year.
I only wish. I probably only have 1 cord ready to burn and not much else. With everything going on in my life, firewood C/S/S has had to fall down the priority list. We will be burning mostly oil for heat this winter. Hope the prices stay low.
I am way behind and putting up all I can get,We use about 4 cord a year. I have 1/2 cord of 3 year old Black Locus 1/2 of this years Maple CSS with another 1 1/2 to already cut into rounds. Need to get it drug home. 1/2 cord of last years Ash. I have another 3 cord bought waiting on delivery. Several Ash trees to drop on my own property. They should make some where around 4+ cords. Hopefully it will get done before snow flies. I have surgery coming up next week and will be laid up 4 to 6 weeks. Trying to get as much dons as I can before that. To top everything off I just discovered a 1/2 cord stack that the Laws of Gravity took over. Will have to restack.
We are behind also. We do have some ash from last year but not enough. Just received the last load of would we ordered this morning. We do know it is hard wood, just not what kind. A lot will have to be resplitt as he likes big splits. Some are just to big for me. So we do plan to use a the fuel oil also.
I ended up selling my 2nd and 3rd year supplies this past year knowing I had a pile of ash to process at the house. Have to play catch up again.
Just replacing the wood I use up. Although I’ll be burning line and sticking oak so I suppose BTU-wise I’ll be increasing my stocks. I honestly don’t know how many years ahead I am. Easily 5 years.
After this past winter's mostly mild temperatures I wonder if the next winter will come back with a vengeance. I'd rather have something and not need it than need something and not have it. I'm stocking up on consumables in general. Grabbing small loads of firewood every few days, and lately I've been scrounging tons of good solid pallets too. Just last night I scooped up another 8 pallets from a beer distribution warehouse. Go figure, people are drinking more which generates more shipping, which equates to more free pallets.
I'll stop building and filling racks when the wife gives me looks. Then I'll build more out behind the barn...
I had big plans to.... then the virus hit... everyone home, using more propane, put in way more hours than I should have trucking it in..
Im ahead of the game but Im hurting on SS wood. I plan on burning 5 cords, have 5.5 cord of dry wood ready to go. I was pleasantly surprised with the black cherry rounds I bucked in the winter and have had stacked (off ground) in the woods. I split them 2 weeks ago and the splits read anywhere from 23 - 18% with moisture meter. They should be ready to go by april. That will be my reserves and puts me just under 6 cords and hopefully it will keep me out of 2021-2022 stacks.
