So in my adventures I found a guy on CL that had 2 IBC totes for sale. IBC = Intermediate Bulk Container. People use these for transporting oils, chemicals, mulch, liquids, etc. This was back in maybe December of 2019 and I was getting sick and tired of storing my kindling in 44 gallon trash cans. Every time it rained I had to dash out there and cover them up and the airflow was not optimal. I bought 2 totes for $25 each. One was just the cage, one had the tote. I rented a home depot truck and drove an hour one way to pick it up. Once I brought it home I drilled 1/2" holes all over the sides and the bottom and then I cut off the top, leaving the sillcock open. This has worked out amazingly well. Each 275 gallon tote holds the same amount of kindling as 5 of those garbage cans. At $50 a pop those cans were getting expensive. Here's a few tips - don't cut off the top until you drill the holes. The tote is extremely flimsy without the top. Also, use a circular saw to make 2 slices and off comes the top. Ezpz. Two of the cages will fit into the LONG bed of a Tacoma with the tailgate down. Make sure to secure your straps to the tie downs on the bed, not on the track. And don't pay too much for them or else it ain't worth. I was lucky and ended up buying 6 of them from this guy, all for $25 each. I bought the Tacoma in March so that made it even cheaper (I mean expensive). 2 of them were cages only so 4 came with the actual plastic totes. I have two and a half totes filled with kindling. I've got kindling for years. Here are a few pics.
I’m trying to find just the cage near me and can’t find anything. Closest ad I’ve seen is 2 hrs away. Anybody know of any north of Pittsburgh, PA at a reasonable price please let me know.
My best friend called yesterday to see if I wanted any totes, can have all I want for free. Told him I would take 2, probably should get more
This thread is actually ironic in its timing, because today I was wondering what to do with them and I was thinking kindling. One full would probably be 2 years worth of kindling for me. Already have 2 full of uglies, not sure how many more of those I really need
I got a skid steer that I need to get a set of forks for. Then I would be able to put totes to greater use
I saw the pics as I was reading the thread: "Whoa, Home Depot rents some pretty nice Tacoma's these days!"
Looking good LordOfTheFlies and nice idea with the kindling. I picked up one last year off CL, currently have some uglies in it!
How far north in Nebraska? I have 4 totes left to fill, then will be looking for more. The last place I got them now thinks they are gold plated...
1 hour north of North Platte or 1 hour south of Valentine. Totes are not hard to come by, farmers, fertilizer applicators, etc. surprised you can’t get em easily in Kansas
That’s a little too far for me, I’m just 15 miles south of Falls City, NE. There are totes everywhere here, but everyone wants at least $20 for them, even though that same place will flatten them and haul them to the scrap yard for $40 per ton... My BIL used to work for a large chemical distribution center, where I would get 20-30 totes a year, but the new management has an inflated value placed on them.
Holy crap I thought I was nuts. I've got 17 of the holz hausens lmfao. You got me beat by a factor of 10. Holy Jesus!
leoht is the real deal...him and his pa flew in from Aussieland for an FHC GTG at Backwoods Savage place last year...now that's a dedicated FHC'r!
