Funny, I call it a forest when taking to someone, but say, "I'm headed out in the woods with the Hounds"

Something like you can’t see the forest through the trees?

Them there dictionary people have thicket as a synonym for forest... Evidently they have no idea what our thickets are around these parts.

To me, around here it's woods. The forest is national forest, like George Washington and Jefferson national forest.

I think it depends upon where you live. To me it is the woods. To most people who live in a city it is a forest.

In a way it is like drinking coke. To some it is pop. To others it is soda. To still others, no matter what the flavor, it is coke.

To me woods has always been the defacto name while forest is reserved for a massive continuous wooded area. This got me curious so I looked up what local DNR has to say about it. The forest and wildlife program requires 10 continuous acres, too bad I don't own enough land. They encourage things like hunting and firewood cutting on the land.

Around here it's woods or woodlands.

Forests (in my mind) are vast espanses of hilly or mountainous woodlands with very little signs of anything modern in them.

No one should probably ever call a cactus forest a woods. Or a petrified forest. Forest Gump is not a woods, either, on the other hand, Tiger Woods is not a forest or even a tiger. Or a tree.

Thank you Wildwest! Yes, 60. Hard to believe I lived this long, I had not planned to, have been busted up a couple of times and am very lucky.

Today I picked up four small pickup loads of firewood on one end of my property and dumped them at the woodpile. Not a bad day - in fact just exactly the day I wanted. Oh, and took a load to the campground just rid myself of some uglies, shorts, etc. (They think I'm doing them a favor!) The best part of retired life is choosing what to do each day.
