Farmer Steve is giving away his bar oil hoard if any of you are near PA. He's giving his hoard of TP with each gallon also. True fact. Just PM him NOW !
In Ct we find the shade and get it made Thanks to this post I grabbed two gallons at Lowe’s today. $11+ per. Grab it while the grabbins good. They had cases of it.
Thought of this thread today as I was cutting logs to size for the splitter. Went back to the tailgate to fill gas and oil and saw this drip. Thought to myself, I didn't spill/overfill the oil tank. Danggone oil container about the same thickness as a cheap water bottle. Must have nicked the bar/chain/tooth and cut the bottom of my bar oil jug. So now it sits on its front and the damaged area high and not leaking. Yep, almost a shortage here!
I did that once myself. Another time, almost full jug fell off the tractor. I was backing up, pulling a log, and hit it with front tire...BOOM...oil went everywhere.
I have a hard time thinking of a bar oil shortage since bar oil is easy to produce and oil inventories are at record highs. Brands/companies come and go while package design is always changing so most shortages are related to de-stocking and usually followed by no inventory until the new supplier stock arrives. I found Walmart bar oil in the automotive oil aisle between gear oil and motor oil. Not cheap, 10-11$ per gallon. Brands come and go while inventory comes and goes so I stock a year of most stuff while keeping an eye open for sales. Stores going out of stock is bad for business since this encourages folks to move shopping to the internet.
It seems that EVERYONE who carries bar oil no longer has it let alone have it on sale. its the same with a lot of ''things'' . I told a buddy of mine, when the dealers get the prices up to where they want them, they'll have all kinds of every thing. Notice lately NO real sales in grocery stores?? But, all the prices have increased, its like the 22 ammo fiasco, you couldn't beg borrow or steal 500 rds of cheap 22 ammo. When they got the prices up to where they wanted them like magic almost over night there was plenty of ammo to be had. Now it's primers, bullets, and some powders that are on the ''endangered species list'', this is just my personal thoughts about the situation. Overall , the percentage of people burning wood for heat is i'm pretty sure very low. So, you start out by having shortages of items needed by these people, #1 some thing simple like bar oil. Then, it snowballs.
Had to run to Rural King tonight, shelves full of bar oil at $5.79. Interestingly they had Sunoco 1 gal canned fuel, 50:1, for just over $13.
I would not run that 50-1 myself. Not enough oil for the bearings and the piston and cylinder depend on that oil for keeping it cool.
Not contradicting, just asking as a part of my learning curve. If the saw manual suggests 50:1 are you suggesting to run 40:1?
I would...when disassembling an engine that was run on 50:1, the parts just don't feel very oily...and when you are turning up to 13,000 RPM (+) I think a little oil film is warranted. I know plenty of people run 50:1 and get away with it, some even long term...but all things being equal, a 2 stroke ran at 40:1 will outlast one ran at 50:1...which I think is pushed by the EPA...and, we all know about manufacturers and planned obsolescence...
I like to run 32:1 in everything. The only bad side of too much oil is cleaning/replacing a spark plug or am I wrong? Now I did pick up some synthetic oil recently and mixed it at 80:1 instead of their 100:1.. I'm a bit leary about it honestly but I think it will be fine in my 32:1 equipment. Which is another reason I run 32:1 in everything, I don't want to mix up different ratios for different equipment.
Well, to be honest, I have never used anything like that...probably wouldn't unless somebody gave me a bottle, might put it in my old Crapsman weedeater...I know they have come a long way with synthetic oils in recent years...but 80-100:1...sheesh! That's 100 drops of gas with one drop of oil in it...not much lube! Maybe huskihl has some experience with these "premium" synthetics?
