First time (real) chainsaw buyer here. Just dropping you all a note to say "thank you" for all of the helpful information, advice and humor I've read here over the past weeks while researching saws. Ended up with a new MS261 from a great NE Ohio Stihl dealer. Clearly this is a much better saw than this operator deserves or needs (6 acre wooded property, but probably only cutting 1-2 cords per year plus clean-up activities), but it sure was fun doing the research and now owning this fantastic machine. PPE is next (chaps, helmet, boots). Until then, I'll just be reading the manual and admiring it I hope to be back here frequently as my “Bug”-induced firewood journey continues. Thanks again!
I have a 028 WoodBoss which is the saw you need for that size lot, you send me that MS261 and I'll send you the 028, Backwoods Savage always said I was all heart. Congratulations on the new saw.
Nice choice...Stihl pretty. Have the dealer or pro show you how to hand sharpen. A Stihl/Pferd 2in1 is quick and simple to keep your virgin chain sharp ( and safe ). Full PPE is a must with understanding the risks and how to avoid injury. We've all screwed up, sometimes seriously, out of gross stupidity and ignorance. Done.
Welcome TF440! Nice choice! What dealer did you buy from? Did you get the extended warranty that comes with buying a pack of their synthetic oil? How exactly was your firewood journey “Bug” induced?
Congrats, welcome, and well done. Great picture too! Good idear on the ppe and take the advice above and grab a sharpener you can get comfortable with. That saw with a sharp chain, will cut boards of wood! Welcome! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Congratulations ! That’s a really nice saw that you will get many hours of useful enjoyment from . A word of caution ; If at some point you find yourself with the thought of say , a muffler mod , do so with caution . While it does generally improve a saws performance , it’s a “ gateway “ modification . It can lead to thoughts like “ Man , I really like this mod 261 . But , that 462 own at the dealership only weighs a bit more ,is 72 CC’s ,and will pull a longer bar . “ . And , it won’t end there ... Seriously though , enjoy that new saw . And be safe . John
More from the "Safety Nazis" on chainsaws: get a pro mentor like a local logger or arborist, or take a training program such as GOL (Game of Logging), or in Maine the CLP (Certified Logging Professional class). Though most us don't do it, read the Husky or Stihl manual that comes with new saws. Google "chainsaw injuries and deaths", and look at arboristsite.com for more details on accidents. Be humble with the tool, it is like a firearm. Done.
Thanks for the welcome! To answer brenndatomu, bought the saw from Chagrin Pet Garden & Power in Chagrin Falls. Nice local shop and a Stihl Elite Dealer. And yes, I did get the synthetic oil warranty extension. In terms of “the Bug”, I've been fortunate to be able to work from home during the pandemic, and all this time at home got me thinking a lot of about home/property maintenance, improvement, taking more advantage of the property, etc., and I've always wanted to upgrade the saw given our acreage. And we've happened to have a few trees/large limbs fall over the past few months as well which I want to start handling myself versus calling our neighbor and his 391. Also thank you for all of the additional safety notes and suggestions. Believe me, I appreciate them and take them seriously. While I was cleaning up storm damage with my neighbor, he wanted me to try his 391 -- no PPE just go at it. I politely declined. Just not worth it. Thanks again!
Welcome to the forum TribeFan440 You'll love that saw. Mine is not very old but is a sweet saw to run and unless you start cutting something like a 36" diameter oak, it is all the saw you'll need. Not sure which bar you have but we have a 20" bar on ours which helps when cutting low so I don't have to bend so much and with my terrible back, that is worth a lot. Because you apparently are just getting starting, here is some reading for you that could very well help you a lot as it has others: Primer on Woodburning by Backwoods Savage

Welcome to the club. Lots of great folks here sharing knowledge and humor, as you have noticed. Very nice saw, glad you did a lot of research before buying. And PPE is a great idea. Enjoy your days with it, look up and around.
