Interesting the insulation on the plug wire.
I’m narrowing down on a 254xp heat related issue. No air leaks.
Coil set was suspect because the boot was cracked and electric taped and the partition wall is cracked and falling apart.
I think it’s interesting heat on the plug wire was recognized and designed it the saw.

 

Well, I've been lurking here for quite some time and thought this might be a good reason for a first post, this is the first new saw I have purchased. Just sold six saws (A MS661C, MS181C, MS441, 288XP, 266SE and a 346XP) and have retained an MS660 (With Cross MMWS Cylinder) and an MS261C. I have to say this is an amazing saw, light, powerful and with incredible acceleration:

Sorry my friend, shipping from this little island down under would have probably killed off any deal we did make. I decided to rationalize my collection a little and as my Dad was a Stihl dealer and mechanic many years ago I though I better not have divided loyalties!

 

Yes sir, I was aware of that. Been available off the shelf here in NZ since last November. Big step for me, I normally by my saws secondhand needing work and have a full workshop and tooling available to do complete rebuilds, unfortunately the MS500i is a too new model to be able to do that! I got a smoking good deal too, I buy lots of parts off my Stihl dealer so he gave me this saw, including the bar and all taxes for $2000NZD (approx $1280USD)

 

By the way, thanks for the friendly welcome everyone. I love cutting, splitting, stacking and hoarding firewood, and although my stash is nowhere near as impressive as most on here I think I'll fit in.

 

Think of it this way - you'll never need a carburetor! I like them because they have more power ounce for ounce than any saw made. Ever. Pretty sure we're all happy for you here, even IF we seem a little jealous!

 

Yeah I hadn’t looked to see where you’re from when I wrote that. So are there quite a few of those good Husqvarna saws down there!

There are a few about certainly, I have built 5 288's now, all from parts and the 266se was an ex Forestry Service saw that was actually in great condition, I only paid $70nzd ($45USD) for it, I did just replace the piston, a couple of mounts and rebuilt the carby. Heres some random pics of the saws:

 

Out back to get some garden posts and came across a leaning dead. White Pine I think. It was near vertical when I came across it.

 

Nice.... I’ve never even laid eyes on a 288 in person, let alone 5. And that 266? .... I gave about 10 times as much for mine! How hard is it to get parts for the older ones there.

 

Commonly needed parts are no problem at all for both the 288 and 266. They were made for a long time and in big numbers (the 288 is still made and sold new in Brazil) also, forestry is one of the biggest industries in the area with large plantations of Pine with port Nelson being a major export port for timber, so we do see a relatively good number of secondhand saws come up for sale.

 

Behold the Poulan 2150 ! Runs pretty decent all things considered . Fuel line broke at the filter . The filter screen in the carb was completely full of wood fibers . So much so that it would barely purge . the pump and metering diaphragm were stiff . But it still tried to run . It does have some scoring , but the saw works well ( 3000 , idle , 12200 top ) . Gonna tell the guy to add about 3/4 of an oz. of Extra oil to his mix .
