Somehow I can envision a team of Amish men pouncing on this wonderful opportunity with large hand saws... although I'm not too sure they're insured :)

Pine? I'm on it like a hornet.

I'm surprised he didn't ask to bring coffee along.

I have lots of pine, fir and spruce here ready to burn.

Personally I like to keep a fair amount on hand myself. Great kindling and easy work of getting your good stuff going! For anyone that still believes the old wive's tale, ask them what people in subarctic climates burn indoors. There aren't exactly a lot of red oaks and sugar maples at high latitudes. Those people burn pine/fir/needle trees almost exclusively and you don't see their cabins torched to the ground every year.

Unfortunately, it is hard to tell Sarcasm from Serious online.

We heat almost Exclusively with wood, average about 10 cords/year, mostly Douglas Fir, White Fir and Hemlock, some Lodge Pole Pine and Ponderosa, to some, ANYTHING with Needles, is “Pine”

I would Love to have more Hardwoods in the mix, we get some Alder now and then, more “Then”;).

For us “Hardwood” is generally downhill, far away from the trailer, or most often Both, and Rarely has Leaves:(

We burn what we can get, with most of our open cutting areas starting around 3,500’elevation to over 6,000’ with 5,000 being the average, we are solidly in Conifer Country

What little Hardwood we get is most often scrounged yard tree removals

I’m waiting (but getting Impatient ) for my neighbor to have this Huge Maple taken down, he wants me to mill a little of it for him, and I can mill some for myself, and the rest will be Firewood,. Right across the Street

I thought it was coming down right before Memorial Day weekend, but all that got taken down was the Cedar next to it, so far. I don’t normally put much effort into getting Cedar, but it was in his FRONT yard, right across the street, so we will burn it.

Still waiting for that Maple to hit the ground though:)

Yeah I get it, it's been discussed here over and over. Rumor was probably started by someone wanting to keep it all for themselves. As far as the maple goes.......they should get on with the getting down as the suckers could mean it knows that it's done for. Wouldn't be surprised if the ants are munching away at it.

Easy there Doug, some of that Maple burl may be worth more than your average lumber or firewood logs. We have buyers advertising in a lot of Craigslist locations for just such timber. Some pay by the POUND.

    Here is one link

    And here is another.

I should send that Jack Assparagus an estimate for removal & chipping just for fun. With the drive it would be a bit expensive.

IDK Bob, my neighbor Tried to find a buyer, might have just been sawmill, not a Niche buyer like for Burl, but like many, He found out that even LARGE trees from a yard are not much in demand, he couldn't find any interest in it at all. He Wants the Tree GONE, and the removal is going to be $Pendy, he didn't expect to MAKE Money on it, but he did Hope to offset his expenses.

We Had a Douglas Fir about 85' tall, and 3 Cedars ranging from 75'-110' tall, and about 28-30" Diameter removed from our yard, and those were pretty much average, nothing really Special size wise.

D Fir gets Really Big around here, I know of several nearby that are around 60" DBH, or larger, I have no Idea what the height of them is, some you can't get far enough away to really judge their height

    Alaskan Mill 4.jpg

This is a couple that I milled from some of our yard trees, just a Tad bigger than Christmas Tree size

Hey Bob, How would a guy slice and dice a tree like that to get the most desirable burl pieces?

Ray had mentioned some woodworkers might be interested in Burls like those, but he didn't know of anyone in particular, I wouldn't know how they would want the log milled/sawn to get the most productive use out of the Burls.

Well, I've opened my mouth above my pay grade, and I don't know how they would best be sawed up, Doug. I am sure it would be dependent on what the eventual end user would be doing with it. Guitar builders might want flitches as opposed to wood turners that want blocks of burl. I remember there was a huge bust up in Washington of a group illegally poaching Western Maple burls off federal lands - it was a huge deal with some prison time involved, and rightly so. I have some expertise in Myrtlewood Slab tables and some of the very best comes from wood at or below the surface from the rootwad. It can be colored reds, greens, browns, black, you name it. Also forest grown trees are way different (better!) than ones grown out in the open, and I believe that holds true for Western Maple as well.

In the 1970's, old growth Maple and Myrtlewood were mostly sold to Georgia Pacific for pulpwood. A dammed dirty shame, but there was no other real market. I am confident the tree in your photo is worth money - he just need to spend the time to find the buyer wiling to pay to take it.

See? Even Crappy Grand Fir can have some interesting grain.

We have those CL ads occasionally here in W WA. "Want to trade wood for work. Have eight huge trees (good only for firewood) with structures all around, power lines, patios, fences, masses of branches in the trees and, oh yeah, in a tiny back yard and down the hill with no access but a small gate up at the top by the house. Must be bonded, licensed and insured and have all own equipment and at least 15 years experience. Must fall the trees and take the wood and all the branches and debris as well, so you will need a large crew to have it all done on a Saturday. Crew must be experienced landscapers to restore the yard after grubbing out and hauling away the stumps. Will also need a resume and 6 references. Please don't waste my time if you are not serious about accepting this privilege. If this sounds a little unfair to you, you can leave me a bottle of fine, old Scotch to make you feel better." Honestly not too far from the truth! It gives me a headache.
