Been looking for a new firewood lot!
    Houston lake.

Climbed up to about the 3,500 feet above sea level.

Found a good sized Hemlock log and took a cookie off one end.

Looks somewhat wind shook but will make some good firewood. I will have to bring the 390 with the 36 in bar for this one.

Wow! Thanks for the pictures Alan.

Indeed, many of us would have a problem cutting wood there. I'd no doubt just want to sit down to enjoy the view and enjoy being alone in that place! Glad you get to enjoy it.

Awesome! That's a place I could go to get away from it all.

The end of the log where I've taken the cookie off, is all split. This is caused by the high winds on these ridges that beat these trees through the fall and winter, hence we call it wind shook. The wood is sound but no good for making lumber.

The dogs will enjoy this site. They will be able to explore a bit without getting into trouble.

I like getting big logs that are already pre-split like that, but will it throw a wrench in the works for using your winch to retrieve at all?

I'll get to use the winch on some of the bigger pieces and towards the butt, it looks like it might firm up a little. The log is on the road so I will be able to back right up to the log.

There is more wood than I will be able to get. I plan on getting about 5 pickup loads for myself and 16 loads for my MIL. There will be lots left and after next winter rains, the roads will be almost impassable.

Camerawork by Woodwidow? Very nice job.
That hemlock is massive, but I'm guessing there are other trees, if you will get 21 pickup loads.

We see it here in the Northeast, too, usually in Hemlock. Called “shake” here, or ring shake.
