Is This Walnut?

Same yard where i got the honey locust. Initially told i couldnt take it but yesterday yes.

 

I think you're right. I have some black walnut in my stacks, looks nearly identical to your pics.

Looks like black walnut Brad. From what I've read on the interwebs it's not great firewood. Lower BTU'S,leaves more ash,etc,etc. Better let me come and take it off your hands. Wouldn't want you to be disappointed after all that black locust.

 

Wood and bark are mighty light colored for walnut. Looks more like some kind of hickory to me.....

 

Showers today changed my work schedule and allowed me to hit the score. Grabbed the walnut and the other mystery hardwood.
Took it to my friends and split what i could. Some need bucking.

 

The bottom pictures of splits...is that the same wood? The dark of those splite...that looks like walnut. The rounds look much lighter, which is why i mentioned hickory. Im used to walnut showing the darkness on the ends of rounds as well...

 

The splits are from the same logs as the OP pics Eckie . First pic is 12-14" splits, second is longer than 14". I didnt buck the wood.

 

Must be the infamous highly valuable black walnut.

 

It looked like walnut at first, then you split it, erasing any doubt that it wasn't BW.

 

1st pics dont look like any of the walnut Ive ever had which is a lot.... 2nd pics wood is def walnut due to classic purple heart, but bark still isnt walnut-y to me...

Now im curious if theres other walnuts!

 

it was a yard tree so could be some sort of hybrid?

 

Every one of the pics in this thread look like the black walnut we have here.

 

I see a lot of variations in walnut due to age of the tree. Younger tress don't have the thicker more course bark of a big old tree.
