We had an attempted attack tonight. Was in the house, but the second I heard "that sound" an unforgettable sound that you'll learn quick, i ran to the deck picking up the.22 that's always by the door. When i got outside, the rooster was actually fending the fox off, at least the best he could. He's good, lost some feathers but delayed the fox from getting one of the girls. This is exactly why he is here, he maybe mean, but that mean protective nature helped tonight.

I ran onto the deck, racked the .22.... pulled the trigger... nothing. This is why having a button safety or lever safety can get you killed in a bad situation for personal defense. This was only a fox though.... ok, take the safety off, fire, running fox damm miss? Hit? Frustrating! You can practice shooting all the time, but under stress, it's a different story!

I finally called all the girls.... all there one missing. I looked around for a bit with no luck.

About an hour later, the neighbor down the road called saying they had a visitor that liked his tractor! I rode the wheeler down to find our missing hen, ready to roost on his tractor's rops!

Hey fillies and fellas... Check it out! Finally got around to doing some of the actual coop work. We had done plenty between because we were making some changes as this coop was at first, destined to be split in half has now become an entire entity of its own and no separation. The coop for the making is done. We have given ourselves the options of changing everything within. As of the moment, the Month and a half old chicks and 2 mamas with new ones make the population at 33 right now. That is just inside the coop. Sugarbug87 and I have acquired 8 more; 4 Polish and 4 Barred Rocks that are too young at the moment to be integrated with the rest. ‘A Full Rich Day‘ as Hawkeye Pierce would describe it.
We are on our way to those bigger and better things, next comes the inside run and then the outside run.

What we had modified that took lots of time was a clean-out and then floor mats. These were cattle mats that were cleaned off, lots of manure, then moved to the coop. Reset and then the fencing was put over as a door before we initiated this door. A couple more adjustments inside and out but for the time being, it’s complete!

Its amazing how fast these broilers grow. They're twice the size as my layer chicks already.

Here's my work in progress. The coop on the right started life years ago as a rabbit hutch, then became home to a dozen quails. We recently parted with the quails and now have 12 chickens. The coop on the left I bought as a kit from Tractor Supply and I added a 13' long run in-between, connecting everything together. Funny thing though, the birds that were put in the quail coop stay close to it, while the ones that started in the TSC coop remain at that end. COOP_5-2020.JPG

Been working on the coop and run. Here are some pics. All of the lumber came from the logs that I milled with my buddy when we built the place, the posts are cedar the rest is either pine or spruce, the run framing is raw cedar logs and the run rafters are spruce poles.

my friend came by with his Kubota to dig the trench for the wire mesh and posts

DaveGunter you did a great job on it! Glad you buried your wire for the digging predators. Can you take any pics of the inside?

    You'll have eggs August-ish I think.....

Yes, they hatched mid March, my wife has taken over care of the chickens. She got 6 more about a month ago. Not much done to the interior yet, just some linoleum on the floor and about 15 inches up the wall, and a 2x4 roost.

Brown, white and blue eggs expected I think, some of the chicks were unidentified from TSC, my wife has been trying to ID them, we have 16 now, not sure how many roosters yet either.
