Ladies and Gentleman, this message is a reminder, regardless political side, race, religion or anything else you can think up. Many of "GREAT" Men and Women gave their lives for us! This is our time to Please take a moment sometime this weekend to Remember, a Father, Mother, Brother, Sister, Son, Daughter, Aunt, Uncle, Friend or Neighbor who served and give them a little prayer or a "Thank You"! This is about us as Americans and our Freedoms. My respect goes out to all the other Men and Women of all the other Countries also who fought for their freedoms. My Personal Prayers are said for all of you daily, but know you are "NEVER FORGOTTON"!!!
Things are sure different this year. Normally now we'd be at the veterans cemetery for the service, gun salute and flyover. Then spend some time by my parents and in laws, who surprisingly are only a few feet apart (if you saw the size of this place, a sea of headstones you'd know what I mean). But this year all is canceled do to the wuhon lunch special. So sad.
the cemetery on my dead end road has a few veterans. Each year I place the flags there and promptly remove them Tuesday after, to ensure it is a special acknowledgement. I have been researching the single grave in the picture. So far it appears it is a Confederate veteran. I found him on the cemetery list with a notation as a vet, so I made sure he was given his due. Come next week I will see why he is listed. In the early sixties the DAR scoured the country side to ensure all veterans graves were noted.
It is on my quite a bit. Many made great sacrifices to allow us to enjoy the freedoms we have today and we are forever greatful. Last year, right before Veterans day, membets of our sons karate school volunteered to place American flags at a local cemetery. It is basically maintained by volunteers. Using a map we found all the ones in our section. Some went back to the Civil War. Here is a few pics in the brush. Sadly, this is a tough area to maintain. We did not have tools, but knocked down what brush we could. Doing some volunteer work does the soul good.
Good thread, Dave. Holidays, such as Memorial Day, is more than a day off, cookouts, and beer. I made this up years ago and it gets put at the bottom of my driveway the weekend before a holiday, and I take it in the weekend after. Nothing fancy, but the number of people blowing their horn, goes up while it's out. So I know some people do appreciate the minor effort to put it there.
My brother is an army vet. For years he has been participating in the memorial day ceremonies. I called him yesterday wonder if everything was cancelled. For the most part yes. They did close it to the public. The participants are meeting at the American Legion. From there they are going to the cemetery for a gun salute and taps. That is all.
Please pass a Thank you, "from me" for those who did that if you know them!!! We have a civil war one here also that was left abandon years back. It's not to it's full Glory, but much better than it was and stones are readable now.
God bless those who put their lives on the line for our freedoms and paid the ultimate price. Happy memorial day everyone. And thank you to all veterans and those still serving.
Great post, Dave! I am forever grateful of the men and women who sacrificed all to give us our freedoms, I do not take those freedoms lightly!!
I got a facebook post that explained the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. This weekend we honor all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice so we can live in this great land. Veterans Day is to honor all those who are serving or have served but still are alive. Correct me if I am wrong.
Thank you WeldrDave for the reminder this year prevents us from traditional celebrations! The grave cleaning and marking is perfect!
