This tree was covered in ivy when we first moved to house in 2018. I killed the ivy off but tree still died last summer. Thought ants may of killed it, but was surprised by what I saw under the bark. Resembles ash borer disease. If it is a type of ash, Im not familiar with it.
Judging by the last picture it looks like dogwood! Looks like elm maybe? Pictures of limbs/twigs would confirm.
Looks kinda like hophornbeam. Lots of bugs like that tender cambium. The bug tracks are too small for ashborer.
The top pic reminds me of some birch we have, not sure which variety, yellow maybe? I know its not real flaky/papery like most birch, but some that i have seen that have that yellowish/greenish tint on the big logs have tighter bark near the base. I dont know that ive ever cut birch and looked at cut face/rings, so could be way off based on that pic. That sure is some fuzzy/stringy inner bark in those other photos.
That end grain, bark and fibrous, papery cambium layer remind me of black locust, but the color of the wood is off........ Make a split and see what we can determine......
Do you have any rounds split Biddleman ? Ash has the center pith. Check for that. The stringy bark says ash as well. Im rescinding my elm opinion. It might be blue ash. If im not mistaken, Ralphie Boy is familiar with it. Maybe he can chime in.
I agree we need the twigs and leaves or buds, may be elm... http://cortland.cce.cornell.edu/resources/know-your-trees
Looking at the stingy bark I'm gonna say some thye of hybrid poplar. Reminds of the one's I cut down last summer.
The last set of pics the wood looks to me like Sassafras, but I would expect the bark to be a little bit thicker for that.
