    This wood was horrible to split. I initially thought it was an elm, but now I’m thinking gum? I can take pictures of splits tomorrow.

    Well it is definitely not Elm. I do not recognize it but someone will.

    I was thinking it could be that too by looking at the bark.

    Looks nothing like any of the sweetgum I've ever dealt with.

    Yeah I’m not sure. Just know it was very stringy and my 27 ton splitter was struggling with it

    The dark end grain reminds me of hickory.
    The bark, not so much, maybe.

    Upon seeing the OP i wasnt sure but now seeing the splits i say elm as well. Being a hand splitter i avoid it like the plague otherwise ill end up with splitters PTSD!

    Ha ha, I only just figured out what species of trees is in my back yard. I knew it was some type of maple from the shape of the leaves. But yesterday I searched online for Silver maple seeds. There they were. It's a silver maple.

    That bark does not resemble any Elm I have seen. Maybe you guys back east and the Midwest have a type I have not seen before.
