I just planted 4 Ozark, Chinquapin, Chestnuts last week. I need to get tubes around them soon. The foundation trying to save them is just using cross breeding of pure genetics from naturally blight tolerate trees. The testing they have done on the newer generation of trees shows many are equal in resistance to blight as Chinese chestnuts. There's hope hope for the American Chestnut trees yet.
Sorry if I’m behind here, but can someone point me toward a source for American Chestnuts? I have plenty of space and I’d love to give them a go.
In the comments of the article I linked, was this: "I joined the ACF and received 4 transgenic nuts earlier this year. I planted them in pots and am waiting for them to grow to small saplings and look forward to transplanting them to my forested land when they are big enough, hopefully by this fall."
i bought mine from chief rivernursery.com i guess theyre from grafton wisconsin there about 6 to 12 inches tall they had also 12 to 18 inch height ones listed and they were selling 100 percent americ cheetnuts
I got my Ozark Chestnuts fromTHE OZARK CHINQUAPIN FOUNDATION – Saving An American Treasure My wife got me a membership for my birthday. I received 5 nuts that I over wintered them in the fridge crisper. 4 had sprouted and had tap roots about 6 inches long 2 weeks ago when I planted them. I planted the 5th nut too just encase he wanted to sprout late.
