9mm ammo preferences

I’ve got yet to shoot it but have a S&W in 9mm. I’ve been stocking up on ammo to some degree and there’s about 4-5 different brands involved with the pile I have intentions of sending down the range lane. Since some guns don’t always respond well to certain labels, I’m curious what you had problems with and what you likely did to change it. Cheaper isn’t always better I hear but it’s up to us to keep the guns functioning well.

Include some defense ammo? My gun doesn’t do +p+ but will handle +p. Might try shooting a couple rounds to learn how those respond.

 

I do not recommend Speer Gold Dot. I picked up 2 boxes of these and I'm not happy at all with them. I'll go back to carrying Hornady.

 

I have a small hoard of these for my pew pew needs.

 

I actually haven't been able to find a pack of that in 9mm. .22 yes. I found Remington Range ammo and at a local warehouse was some Magnum and Sellier and Bellot. The shelves are pretty bare these days...
But I’m not complaining because if I’m still finding some then I’m more than ok with that. What was the issue with the Speer batch?

I’ve got these. Yours look very similar!

 

The critical defense are 115 grain vs 135 on the duty. I think that's the only difference.

 

What s&w do you have? My sv9e doesn't care what it shoots, as far as I can tell.

For shtf ive got DRT frangible ammo.

 

SD9VE gray! I had done some research on the gun and a general consensus was no cheap steel cartridges. Fouled the loading or cycling. Brass or polished zinc got propped up more for its positive reviews.

I have not fired steel cased ammo in mine.

 

I’m itching to head to the range but got some more things to take care of until that happens. Things are opening up around here but likely to be busy naturally....

 

I can't get them to shoot a tight group, like other stuff I've used.

I have some Blazer, that's decent plink ammo IMO. And I'll keep buying that exact Hornady for carry. I've used it in the past and decided to try something different. Mistake in my case. I'll go right back to it.

Fwiw, this particular S&W we have ,doesn't have a great trigger.

I don't like that there's too much trigger pull tension and it messes up your accuracy. There's trigger kit fixes for it though. I just haven't gotten around to buying the fix.

There's the apex kit, plus this one. Surely others too. 7+ lbs pull is way too much.

I had a friend do a trigger job on my Glock. About 2.5# pull.

 

The S&W sdve was designed as a defensive pistol and for that purpose a fairly stout trigger is somewhat by design. You need to be deliberate in the pull and dont want a light weight trigger when pulling from a holster or belt/pocket, etc.
Individual guns can be picky about ammo. The S & B range ammo as has been mentioned already is some of the best out there (reasonably price too).
I like the Hornady Critical Defense for carry, too.

Is that for your carry gun, or for competitive shooting?

 

Home defense mainly. No competitive shooting here just target plinking. I edc an LCP2.

 

Yeah I watched some other reviews and this was the first thing that came up. Watched a very decent video about replacing the springs. The review even said to replace the trigger before you shoot the thing....
