Twigster what is the xtra cost?

 

I can’t answer any of your questions directly, but I have a plane Jane black IS sitting here waiting to get installed. I can say that I love the way it looks without any of the other added aesthetic additions. I went for the ash pan and the soapstone liner. Can’t provide any feedback because it isn’t installed yet unfortunately.

 

I’m not sure what the extra cost is. Guessing $150 extra.

 

IMO, yes, it's worth it. Soapstone holds a MASSIVE amount more heat than firebrick. The soapstone will make the stove warm up a little slower as the soapstone "charges" but then really helps keep the house warm longer during the slow decline at the end of the fire cycle.

 

I think it was included in mine.. Definitely get the ash pan!!

 

Where is it going then, are you tearing out the prefab FP?

 

I would get the soapstone, it still shocks me the heat that comes off my stove when there’s only a few coals left.

Yes, we also have a Woodstock fireview, it’s double lined soapstone. I can’t say enough about the soapstone. It’s a very comfortable heat.

I agree, definitely get the soapstone. Just as others have added the soapstone definitely holds the heat even after the fire is "out" and only small coals remain. I have the side panels lined with soapstone as well as the interior brick is soapstone.

 

I’m still working on the three prefabs, it’s gonna be so much money I’m still trying to figure out how to deal with it.

The IS is going in my workshop/coffee roastery. The heat is resistive electric and I spend about $85 a month in the winter just to keep the temp 40-45° in there. Unpleasantly cold to sit for hours running the roaster, etc.

Using your advice, I got Selkirk piping from menards for a great price, double wall black up to 16ft ceiling, and then 12ft of class A and all associated other components for under $1k, local metalfab installer wanted $2750 for the same, obviously installed. Mine would be in but I am scared of extension ladders and I haven’t been able to rent a lift yet.

Well I finally put money down on my IS! I’m pretty excited. I did go all plain Jane and soapstone inside and out. Do these come with the Condor probes standard? I forgot to ask them when I ordered. Shipping is pricey out to WA.

 

I read they do now.

 

So what was the grand total? Did they nip you for WA SST? I too would go plain jane, I just can't handle the extensive "art".

 

Funny - you reminded me of the Mrs' comments about the "art" at the Hirshhorn.

 

Its great that this art is an option for those that want it but hands and shoes sticking out are not my thing.

 

Get all the soapstone you can. And the ash pan is a must!
