Maybe at another time, in another place, and another thread I'd be interested in hearing on how a holz hausen is not for wood hoarders. Stack it how you want if that's what pleases you. But I ain't going to hijack this guy's thread. Respond if you want but I ain't going to read it. Hoard on.

Good use of the space you have.

Wow was busy all day and lots of responses! Awesome and thanks everyone! Yeah, I guess the consensus is indeed red maple. I don't know how old the tree is but the rounds I got were pretty substantial. Definitely not a super young tree.

Getting wood out of the holz hausen isn't really a problem for me. Last winter I only had 2 stacks and I kept them covered with a cheap HF tarp, weighed down with splits that I screwed those eye hooks into and then hooked into the tarp. Having them on the pallets is nice, keeps the bottom dry, gives some nice airflow from underneath, and while I have seen bunnies I have not seen any snakes in there...knock on wood. Also, I had a consistent 11-13% MC in all the wood, including the inside pieces. I had plenty of airflow in there but hey man, build what you want and how you want! I enjoy it and I do need to conserve space. The other benefit that nobody mentioned is that they are really, really stable. Since they angle down towards the center, the entire stack is self supporting and I had ZERO pieces fly off, even from the tops, during the crazy 60mph gusts we had a few weeks ago. I was stunned.

What was a pain, however, was a guy I sold a cord too that wanted 50/50 oak and black locust.....and of course I only had a half stack of locust and it was on the bottom. So when I took off the top to get to the bottom the whole thing was just kind of annoying really (plus it was raining on the delivery day so that sucked). Now I've decided to try and keep each species in its own stack as much as possible. When I was first gathering wood I didn't really have that much so I just stacked it all together. That said I have one stack right now of spruce, red cedar, and black birch. :p

Yeah, I kind of like having this much wood. I can sell some if I want at the price at want to the person I want. I don't have to sell anything to anyone for any other reason. The first guy I sold a cord too was questioning my math skills (I'm Chinese - I can do math damm it) and even asked if I accounted for the wheel wells in my truck bed. I mean what is that, like 4 splits? Come on.....and then when I started stacking he questioned whether or not it was 8' long and I said "Hey man, I measured your driveway door with a laser.....it's 8' and that's why I stacked it the way I did." Even after I was done he was skeptical and "threatened" to send me a picture after he restacked it under his shed (he didn't want me to do it) and of course, no picture was ever sent because I made sure he got a little more than a 4 x 4 x 8 cord. This was the perfect example of the customer NOT being right. First and last time he's getting my wood. His loss, not mine.

Well, I've got my work cut out for me (no pun intended). Did a little splitting today, started raining, decided to take it easy. I just love being outside, smelling the different smells of each species, and just work done ahead of time. I'm the guy who has 2 packs of papertowels, 2 packs of toilet paper, 2 packs of microfiber towels, 12 cans of brake cleaner, quarts and quarts of motor oil and filters at the ready. The only thing I wish I had more of, in hindsight, is disposable face masks and hand sanitizer. Heh heh.

I moved up a bunch of the wood to make a bit more room for the cars.

I also did some landscaping behind my parking spot. There was some real crappy flagstone and slate steps that were so crooked I'm surprised I haven't busted an ankle thus far. Now I can roll the garden cart up the back side of the house and put a few stacks there! Or I can even drive the truck right up as well! :dex:
