Brought a load of brush in this morning and spied this. Couldnt identify. Some pretty spalting. I did take just one log to give it a try. After thinking about it im saying willow! Yuck! If so ive never scrounged the stuff and never will.
Good one. "Working hard or hardly working" is another. I was just looking at the btu chart on here and didnt realize BE ranked as high as it does. I really dont like silver maple. Sassafras, catalpa, and basswood seem to be my SS preference woods. I do have 80-90% of a cord each of tulip polar and SM for next year. Easy scrounges and quality splits so took them. Of course with me i never know what my next "unexpected" score will be. Yesterday for example, was a surprise scrounge. Some catalpa left and an easy grab when i go that way next week.
I've said it before here, but I really like using silver maple...mixed in with other denser woods it really seems to get the party started! Whenever you see red streaks like that you know you have BE...
I was under the impression BE bark looked similar to maple. Cant say ive seen one around that im aware of...and im very aware of trees! Drives Ms. buZZsaw crazy when im driving. "Watch the road and not trees" is a common phrase when we're in the car together. You might be a wood hoarder if you use trees as navigational tools! Sometimes i do that!
I think if there is space in the stacks and you aren't too far ahead, you take whatever comes up. 6 years ahead and running out of space is the time to be selective. At least that is how I've done it.
Hi my name is Steve and I'm a wood snob. I leave box elder where it belongs. IN THE WOODS!! Not really that bad Brad but with so much other good wood here I only cut it if it's in my way.
Even thought it is in the maple family I never thought much of any box elder reminded me of a maple. It splits fine. Does not burn like maple at all; seems to burn slower but certainly not the heat a maple will give.
