Havent been to the dump since it reopened a month ago. (they shut down the wood/brush area for two months) Had some hemlock branches to bring there and my thoughts were of scrounging wood of course. I back up to unload, get out of the PU and to my amazement i spy a couple pieces of, could it be, black locust! WOW! Ended up digging some pieces out and found a few mulberry logs too. I asked the guy in the bobcat to pull the brush back where the locust was and while i was waiting for him i walked around the pile only to find a few more mulberry logs nice and clean. He wouldnt use the bobcat for me and was wondering why on earth i was taking the weed wood. I was going to give him an education, but he sells wood too and id rather not let him in on our secret. "My customers would think its pine!" he says! Wasnt a whole lot, but made my Monday a whole lot better! There was more BL buried (i bet the whole tree) that i could see but didnt really wanna risk/push my luck it to get it out
Hey Mulberry is good wood! Hard to find here, but I do grab the little bit that I can get my hands on!
Scarce around here too. The number of mulberry trees ive seen in the area i can count on one hand. Is black locust in your area Cash Larue ?
We have lots of honey locust, which is probably the best wood you can get around here. But I’ve never seen black locust in Colorado. I’d love to find some though!
That's the thing about dump wood, they are always pushing it around and burying the good stuff. Sometimes I can pull chunks out with my log tongs. If I'm lucky, I pull up before the loader pushes it, but man, does he ever like to neaten up the pile!
Hah weed wood. Why don’t you go back and tell him, if he uncovers it for you and you let him on a secret and maybe a couple of cold ones? Come to a negotiation, from a wood fellow to another its Nice to sweeten the pot! Win-win.
I did ask if he gets a lot of this in and it could be hit or miss. I also asked if he could put any aside, but its a big operation with only two guys in the yard and a lady in the building. Really cool guy and i was thankful i could even scrounge. The company prior didnt let me do that...unless he wasnt looking. Id drive to the blind side of the brush pile and take wood. My other problem is my availability. If he were to call with some wood and i couldnt come right away. It'd be a lot different if i was retired and haunted the dump constantly scrounging wood. I dont even live in my old home town anymore and technically am not supposed to be dumping there. Shhhhhhh! He did take my phone number as someone had asked if he knew of anyone wanting to take any wood. Of course itll end up being some crap wood.
Yeah, ya never know. I’ve never seen any black locust. But I keep my eyes open. But even the honey locust doesn’t normally grow naturally here. People planted them as yard and farm trees, and now they pop up all over the place in the Denver metro area. Mostly the non-thorny type.
