small question guys i was wonderin if anybody here has burned a fair share of sourwood and how was it ?
I never burned any. I checked Forest Service fact sheet and it said it has very little commercial value but the wood is often used locally for tool handles and fuel. I'd say burn all you've got, it's probably pretty good fuel if folks use it for tool handles.
sourwood is also known as the sorrel tree i guess .... ive split up some and it was a pain to split up but never really burned any
Ahh. We don't have that the here at all. It's not easy to find the BTU rating for it, or much about it as a firewood tree. I did find info that it has 19 million BTU's per cord. So, like elm.
Not on my tree farm! It is in the Nature Conservancy! Boo! patrick kozlowski I have the largest sourwood in Indiana, hence my username. Indiana DNR has a registry of the big tree of each species. It is very uncommon in my State. The farm is near the Ohio River and my farm is likely the northernmost place for them. If I had to take one of them down, I would likely have a craftsman make something from it rather than burn it.
I've no knowledge about this tree as we do not have any here. But I'd go with Ralphie in that if it is used for making handles and for fuel, that spells FIREWOOD!
