A neighbor is moving and looking to sell his 038 magnum. He just put a new coil in it and wants $200 for it. I looked up the specs and see its 72 cc which would put it between my other two saws. If it looks like its in decent shape (haven't seen it yet) is that a good deal?
If it’s in good shape, I would say yes. See if you can run a tank of gas through it, cold start, warm start, hot start etc
Sounds like a decent price. Watch out for mag rot on the bottom of the saw. Never ran one but hear they are a torque monster. A bit heavier than newer saws.
That specific model was the biggest disappointment I’ve ever experienced with a chainsaw. They are very heavy and relatively slow cutting saws. Yes, they may last forever but the performance isn’t stellar. That being said, I’ve never seen one for 200 or less. I rebuilt and flipped one for $400.
Yep, good price if it runs, cuts, and starts hot and cold. Hard to go wrong for a 70cc saw for $200. Just don’t expect it to handle and cut like a 440/460. I passed on one for $300 a couple months ago cause the seller couldn’t get it started when I was there. He took it to the shop and put like over $200 into it (new carb, lines, a few other things) then he wanted more for the saw, I passed.
for $200 bucks and it works okay id grab it. Fixing saws is not my thing though and have had good and bad experience buying used.

blacksmith recently refurbished a very low hour 038 for his one uncle, who has since fell in love with the saw. The aren't, by most standards, the most desirable Stihl ever manufactured, bit if it's in good shape and can be made to run relatively cheaply, I think it's worth buying for 200 bucks..... A 72cc vintage pro-model saw for 200 bucks isn't a bad investment. However, for a couple hundred bucks more you can be weilding a decent 044/44 or 046/460 which will run circles around that 038, and more importantly there are tons of parts readily avaialble for the 440/460 base. 038 parts are a little hard to come by.
