My co-worker had this tree blow over in his front yard. I'm pretty sure it's red elm. He lives about 20 or so miles from me. Wondering if its worth the trips? We will have to haul the tractor down there, I'm thinking. He is supposed to get me a picture of the whole tree. We have a hydraulic splitter.
Its elm... Its not what what I think of pizz Elm/Chinese Elm... Thats a good thing (still decent firewood)... I'd say its a good chance its red elm or American Elm... Its not Oak... but I wouldn't pass that ease of gettin' if I was you...
Looks like elm to me. I’d be on that like a chicken on a June bug. 20 miles is pretty common for me to get to a good score and elm is pretty much my staple wood. Standing dead with the bark falling off is best. That stuff looks pretty green so it’ll probably be 3 years until it gets dry enough to burn good. But heck yeah, that looks like an easy score with no brush cleaning up I woodn’t let that get away
I thinking about getting it, help him out. His mom is the one I had on the thoughts and prayers thread, passed away couple weeks ago.
Yep, it's green, blew over last weekend in the storms. We just drove about 20-25 miles to haul a big oak home, 4 dump trailer loads, but that guy loaded it for us.
Its a buddy, help him out, not bad wood for sure, 20 miles is not too bad and you will feel good about doing it.
Yup, looks like elm. Not sure if red elm though. Minimal experience with it. In your case i'd go get it. Good amount, good friend, you have hydro. Maybe process it ASAP as it will be less stringy but dont quote me on that. My red elm score last year An empty truck is a plus when you score wood by accident. Hand splitting red elm EDIT: i didnt see the fact you have to haul the tractor there. Does that require an extra trip to get it home? Can you buck and load the way i do it? Bring the splitter and process on site?
I've actually had Red that was less stringy than the American. Some of that Elm is just torn apart rather than actually split. Sent from my SM-G930VL using Tapatalk
It will require a trip to get the tractor back home. I thought about bucking and chuckin...dont know exactly how much or how big the trunk is. I have rolled big pieces up the ramps to the trailer. It's just so easy to scoop up the logs with the forks and dump them in...yep, I done got lazy in my older years...
Small leaves, and looking at the bark, I’d be in the Siberian elm camp. Totally fine firewood, but a little stinky when splitting. 2 year CSS here at least, before becoming stove chow.
Siberian Elm. I'd go get it Jeff, I've got 1.5 cord drying now from a December take down. Split decently & I like it as firewood. Hefty when green though, tractor for sure.
