Just quit splittin for the day. Taking off my work clothes when I see a truck slowly coming up my driveway. Can tell it’s riding low and slow. Put the clothes back on 12 foot dump truck with wood hanging four feet out the back. Some guy clearing some land for a neighbor down the road. Saw my stacks in the field and wants to know if I want some wood. Umn, yeah, Too wet to get into the processing area. Dump it next to my driveway almost all Black Birch. I’m good with that. Think I’ll drop off some beer tomorrow. Earlier in the day I took a little drive for gas. Went up a side street in the center of town I normally never go up. A little squealing of brakes. What is this I see? The ever elusive Black Locust patch. About one acre parcel just about all BL. A few already down. Hmnn, dang cops in Ct are just about shooting people who dare go outside. Wonder what would happen if I fire up a chainsaw in the center of town
Make sure you load as you cut that BL. If you draw attention to yourself, you just leave, having something to show for it. As far as your black birch - dilly dilly!
Can you find out who owns it? Make arrangements to cut, warn the police that some tree clearing will be happening? Here in NH tree services are still operating.
Oh I did that as soon as I got home It’s an LLC based in Florida. Old guy that moved south with a ton of money. Lots of old manufacturing in our town way back in the day. Much of the area is deemed polluted ground. This is a little chunk of one of those areas that just wont sell. Too much money to clean it up. It sits in limbo. Basically abandoned and monitored by the state. Truth of the whole matter is if they had built up the center of town back in the 70’s and paved it all no one would know a thing. Like most old towns. So, getting permission from landowner is out. In Ct when dealing with issues like this you either take your chances or forget about it entirely. No one in any authority is ever keen on granting permission for anything. The standard response is always No. Maybe I’ll convince the Boy Scouts to build a little park there. I’ll help clear the property. Such a philanthropist.
Get that LOCUST, get that LOCUST get that LOCUST...did i mention, GET THAT LOCUST. Dont make me drive up there! You have my number...ill bail you out...or ill be joining you in the slammer when they arrest me for cutting after your gone. Some nice looking wood dropped off. Green, clean and nice straight trunks. Did you sacrifice a virgin to the wood gods or something? If you need a hand, just ask. You know me im always foaming at the mouth to cut wood!
Well it will sit for many years and stay good.. Seems like BL prefers areas like that to grow in based on my observations. Id chance taking it, but thats just me. Site number two of my "Locust Quest" score was state and/or town property and i worked there in short stints.
Indeed! Sometimes we feel like we can fall in it and still come up smelling like a rose. In this case, you smell like birch. Sweet!
I took those pictures of the BL just for you Brad. Was gonna tag ya but I had faith you’d sniff it out. You always do LOL Not sure if I ever mentioned it but I did think I found a small grove of BL not far from there. Terrible place to stop and work and just one skinny one down. A real death trap of a road with quardrails right up to the tar. I never even got out of the vehicle and walked back to make sure. Did drive by six times Deemed it not worth the effort. It’s along the creek that runs right through this property also. Highways and railroad tracks, now this creek. They do seem to like well used ancient areas. I’ll have to explore this downtown area a little better. I’ll keep you appraised.
Ahhhh, the sweet smell of Black Birch. No one can pass that up. I’ll even put a pinch of sawdust between my teeth and gums. LOL
Yeah, that's next level stuff right there! I thought it was pretty sweet when I heard the neighbor having a silver maple cut, and I walked over the the tree crew and asked them what they were doing with the wood. It ended up being hauled across the street to my yard. That was a sweet score, but nothing like this!
I love black birch. It’s among my favorites. What kind of stove is pictured in your avatar? It looks beautiful!
