Spotted this 365sp on cl today and grabbed it a little while ago. It's basically only dirty from me making a few test cuts at the sale. 150psi comp, 20" Carlton bar with a semi used chain.

Very nice. I obsessed for weeks over a newer one (XT) in a local pawn shop a few months ago, but never could bargain the price down where I wanted it so I have yet to actually try one out. What do you think?

Nice. Real bargain compared to a 372. I'm always on the lookout for those.

I didn't know that the 365 and 372 were pretty much the same saw until i did some quick research on the 365. I only test ran it on a piece of 18" oak i brought along with me but it ate that like butter. It definately pulls better than my 359.

Of course i threw it on the bench when i got home and did a minor tear down to get her totally clean. Im half tempted to pull the cylinder and grind down the transfer divider to really let er rip :saw:

There is some confusion about a 365 SPecial and a 365 XT, they are NOT the same saw. On a SPecial there are NO transfer port covers to remove and grind down. The SPecial is a 48mm bore and the XT is a 50mm bore. If you post a closeup picture of the black tag I can translate it for you.

The SPecial has a cult following, some friendly advice; don't mess with it. These are fine saws just the way they came out of the factory, they are not a detuned 372XT as is a 365XT. They are a stand alone pre-epa product!

Got to be real impressive compared to your 359 for only 2 lbs heavier.

So there's no transfer divider to grind down at all? Im fine with leaving the saw as is but if a little bit of grinding can get me almost 1hp im all for it. I'll post a pic of the plate tomorrow.

A muffler mod should wake this saw up pretty good huh?

Only on the X torque. They are the same in every way other than transfer caps and high top on the 372. Same cylinder. The special has a different piston and cylinder at least. Still a very strong saw for the chassis.

No transfer divider to grind down in an SP! Take a close look at the jug, you'll see! There is nothing to remove and 'grind down'. Like Corey said the dividers are only on the 365XT. There is NO 1 HP to be gained. Unless you go to a full blown port job, there is nothing to be done. If you are planning on flipping the saw, leave it alone, it will make you more money if you leave it as it left the factory.

Don't feel bad, the 365SPs are GREAT saws, you will not be disappointed.

Ahhh gotcha. Thanks for the info. I'll admit im a little dissapointed that i can't squeeze more easy power out of it but, i don't plan on flipping this saw so i'll just use it like it's meant to be used. I picked it up to give my 359 a break on some of the bigger stuff. I know they aren't far apart power wise but it seems like a much stronger and better built saw. Am i able to throw a 372 P&C on it down the road if i decided to rebuild?

I did notice that it has a walbro carb and not the zama so that's a plus right? Hopefully it's a closed port as well. Any way to tell without pulling the jug?

Yes Walbro HDA-12b, A 372 p/c will bolt right on, no problem! It is closed port.

That is a real 365SPecial. built 2004, 44th week 404th saw built that week. They are a serious, non strato saw, no EPA crap. Closed port 48mm bore, 36mm stoke slab sided piston. Muffler is an empty tin can and will handle a mild muffler mod just fine. .5 inch piece of mild steel pipe angled out the top right corner of the muffler, a little silver solder and you are good to go. Don't just punch a hole in the muffler the hot gas will melt the brake flag or the top cover and you will be sad. IMHO The 365SPecial will make a joke out of some highly respected saws!

Hey thanks for the info! At the sale i popped the filter off and saw the walbro and figured it was one of the more desirable 365sp models. Nice to know i got a true 365 special. Nothin in the muffler huh ? I did notice it seems to scream a bit more than my 359. I will for sure be doing a muffler mod, probably sooner than later. That 365 you built in the classifieds, is that the way i should go (parts wise) come rebuild time or just slap on a 372 p/c.
