i give another vote to the american bulldog. very good with family/kids. aloof with strangers, but not aggressive. they do range in size from 60lbs to 100+. they like to be outdoors and active but being on the couch is ok with them also. the shedding part is so so. 20200324_191454.jpg IMG_8737.jpg

also the two that i have had both were off leash trainable if thats something your looking for.

I am a Veterinarian, there are good and bad with all breeds! To over simplify what makes a good pet first of all it’s genetic (nature) then environment and life experiences (nurture). Pointers point, herders herd and Retrivers fetch that’s nature, nurture is how well they do what they do naturally!

What are your 5,10,15 year plans? Moving to an apartment or rental house don’t get anything with Pit, Rott, Dane, Cane, Chow etc!

Based on what you said I’d look into American Bulldog or a Boxer, I can discus further if needed. Make sure you play with both parents or if an older dog see if they like you or hide from you. Hiding is always a BAD sign.

Pick a breed that is "most trainable". And obedience train with them!!
I've spent countless hours training our dogs with a trainer. Turbo and Diesel got many hours of agility training also. Anybody who met those dogs were amazed how good they'd listen. It wasn't hard and wasn't expensive either.

Take the time to exercise the dog and make it listen. It's easy and rewarding...you just need to spend whatever time it takes ....

In my years of going to the trainer, the boxers, Danes and, of course, the little yappers, were always the ones that were the slowest learners. Naturally a large part of the problem was an owner that couldn't or wouldn't control the dog or were just very inconsistent with rules.
(The 2 worst dogs I've seen were boxers.)

We had Rottweilers for 20 years and loved every minute of them.
