each time I passed this treetop in the woods, there was an ash branch just begging to be cut. I smashed the Kubota into the pile and cut it into a log and yanked it out. I noticed a standing dead ash. When I peeled back some bark I noticed it is split into a barber chair. The vibration of the tractor or saw could have caused it to fall.
Good catch scary the danger we don’t know is there sometimes. I know the good Lord has helped me avoid some disasters in the woods! Ought to make some good BTU’s, that ash!
I left the area. The next wind storm will give me another tree to cut. I moved to south of the farm and cut up a big ash that bridged a wet weather channel. I cut up the smaller end and dragged it onto ground to work in it. I left the axe in it for scale. when I came out of the woods my neighbor had sold an old John Deere- the era that had the spinning thing on the side that provides power to implement I guess. I offered to use the tractor to help load it. If I hadn’t, I don’t know if they would have gotten it done.
Some good wood to be had. Blowdowns can be a pain to harvest but well worth it. Lots of hidden dangers in the woods. Good thing you spotted the hazard.
Good call on the ash. Let Mother Nature take that one down. That spinning thing on the side you speak of is the flywheel. That tractor probably does not have a starter on it and you start it by opening petcocks then turning the flywheel until it starts. It can be quite a job sometimes! I should add that on the opposite side from the flywheel is the pulley for powering blowers, hammer mills, etc.
We had a major storm blow through last night. Just went to see if it took out the tree I was concerned about. Boy it sure did, along with several more. All of them near the fence line but fell into the woods. I have all my 2021 season wood close by. I will just build a holsen meite right there.
spent some time cutting the blow downs and gave my new log arch a try on smaller stuff. Kinda handy. I hauled this one to the wood yard. Cut and spilt in one place. Checked the north side and found a dead ash blown over. Perfect for cutting. it is still blocking the lane. I switched out the boom on the tractor for the pallet fork for raising logs to cutting height tomorrow I will attack this
Very nice that it came down for you! I grew up in Mooresville, it took a whoopin the other night, now I've got a few more trees to clean up at my parents and in laws properties. I got a nice shagbark hickory out of it from my in laws place so that's a positive. And of course more ash trees
Loon it isn’t a mile long, but it goes for a bit. Got from the previous owner of my place, who built a southern style mansion and put a bunch of it up. Had this left over and sold it for half to me. My brother did a great job on the install. No waves from frost heaving. Boogeyman yes I have several dead ash that had weak points 30 feet up that set the tops standing up next to the bottom. Several widow makers in the woods too.
Spent a few hours cutting all the downed trees to open the trail. Started the day with fresh chains on the saws. Also cut up the fallen ash blocking the north lane. my latest Holden house is complete except for the shingles to keep rain out. Pretty good day to be outside
