Since I'm under "Stay at Home" orders...I'm getting way ahead of my Wood Choirs... Split my entire kindling wall yesterday...Yah!!! I have notice however on some of my Oak splits that are about 3-4 years old...Mushrooms on the ends....Should I be concerned??? What should I do??? Or should I crack open another Vernor's???
Mushrooms, olives and sausage. Yum! I burned some white oak with mushrooms yesterday. Mushrooms were bone dry and caught fire right away. Just make sure it will dry up off the ground. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Just look at the mushrooms as a way to dry the splits out sooner. I burn them and never have seen any issues from burning them
I was splitting some big maple rounds yesterday that had some moss and mushrooms growing on the bark. I ended up taking the bark off to inspect the wood beneath and it was awesome. Seems sometimes the wood is punky when I see mushrooms or moss and then other times the wood looks great. Sometimes I think the difference is wood species, but I gotta admit, I was surprised that the maple beneath was still good yesterday!
That seems to just be an oak thing. Quite often oak gets mushrooms/fungus growing. Nothing to worry about.
You never know. You could see puff the magic dragon, or Jesus. Depending on what kind of shrooms they are.
I’m an outdoorsy guy and people will ask if I pick wild mushrooms. My answer is this: Nope. Three things can happen with wild mushrooms 1) you have a tasty mushroom 2) you get high as a kite 3) you die. Two out of the three aren’t for me and I’m not a gambling man.
I’ve seen ads for mushroom cultures/starts where they take rounds and let mushrooms grow from them. Not sure if it’s wood specific but also having found any fungus on the wood doesn’t hurt it. Just burn it as is. It does tell you your stacks are in a moist spot though.
The only ones I'll pick and eat are morels. They are freaking delicious and easy to differentiate from the false morels which are the only ones that look even somewhat similar. We're about on that season soon.
We've got at least 1 FHC'er that does this on a pretty big scale. I'd like to get some shroom logs going.
My lady loves mushrooms but there’s a caveat to it: she’s allergic! So I’ve got to get the right ones. Or something she’s tested for before and didn’t have a severe reaction.. anything that is mold/natural cultures. This includes wine or beer in cases! She actually had a reaction on her wrist when we put those barrels in them in the truck. Found out because of leftover yeast that was residual on the bunghole. Luckily Hand Sanitizer and Benadryl helped that out but it’s crazy how quick the reaction can be from. Sugarbug87 has stories aside from this.
