Crossing the US in less than 8 days....on a bicycle!

    Most crews are from 12-16 people in 3 vehicles. The 8-man teams will have bigger crews and they vary a lot but most will have 20 or more per team.

    Strasser yesterday said he feels great and he looks good too. He also got a special award from the Mayor of Annapolis who declared the day as Christoph Strasser day! That was a nice touch. The city can also be praised because they allowed the RAAM management to set up earlier than they were booked for. Nobody expected him to get there that fast so special arrangements were made. Thank you, Annapolis.

    If he had a team with him, then it would help on the flats. The drafting makes a difference.

    Nice thought but that would get a rider disqualified. This is a time trial that is 3000 miles long. So no drafting from another bike or vehicle. There is a provision that says 2 riders can ride together (side by side) for up to 15 minutes maximum.

    And yes, they all have teams.

    I don't remember how old he is but think he is not yet 30 but close. Very strong indeed. The Europeans have really been kicking butts over the last 10 years or so. No American has came close.

    They get addicted. Like runners. They will religiously bike every day and race as much as possible. The super talented Americans go to Europe to train. It is almost like soccer - Huge there. I said early 30s because that is when the long distance and mountain guys usually peak. The sprinters tend to be younger.

    I think in RAAM, most of them have peaked in their late 30's. Don't know why. Then again, not many young riders in this race.

    As for mileage, most of them will ride 20,000+ miles per year in training. One guy who won several years back is called the Million Mile Man. Danny Chew's goal is to ride a million miles before he dies. I haven't checked in a while but think he is over 750,000 now. My hat's off to him as a rider but his personality is a bit lacking.

    On a related note, Jennifer Pharr Davis set a new speed record on the Appalachian Trail back in 2011, covering the approximately 2180 miles in 46.5 days, an average of 47 miles per day. Unlike the bike ride, many parts of the AT are remote and inaccessible by car, which means you have to self support.
