So, I looked at some norway spruce, which grows quickly and is a great wind screen, but get so huge (40'-60' H and 25'-30' wide) Can anyone suggest a pine species that can be staggered closer together, being a bit smaller during maturity?

Great for burning. Not top of chart for btus, but seasons fairly quickly, I'd definitely pick it up!

Silver maple grows quick, but is considered a weed tree which some cities have banned because it is very weak and breaks easily, also is one of the most messy trees. Once you get one going, watch out as they quickly populate an area. They do grow fast, but I wouldn't trust sitting under one of them.

I've got a black spruce in my front yard. It's not terribly tall, maybe 40 feet or so and it doesn't have a very wide spread.

I've got a Norway spruce in my back yard thats at least 60 feet tall. It's the neighborhood lightning rod.

As far as planting goes, I had two white spruce taken down a month or so back and planted a sycamore as a replacement. I transplanted a volunteer crimson king maple that popped up in my wife's flower bed. That one is doing pretty well. The sycamore was on clearance at a garden center. It didn't look so good when I bought it but it seems to be doing better now that it's out of its root bound pot.

Im guessing they grow 2-3 ft per year. I found a site online that has a lot of 50 for 30 bucks. They are only 1' tall. Spruce look good!

I planted 10 blue spruce and two lilac bushes this spring. I also planted some Maple the year before and some Lombardy poplar that my MIL gave me. Thankfully most of the Lombardy didn't make it.
