I hate to do it...But I got these all over my property here in SE WI. Most are small, almost bushy shrubby kind of trees. Wood is very hard, tight grain. Similar to a locust I think. But the wood is RED inside. Salmon colored to pink/red. There is a bright orange layer directly under the bark. The bark is somewhat scaly, looks almost like a black cherry on the little ones and very dark almost black. As you can see by this piece they do get larger too.

Picture don't show it really, but that heart wood is PINK salmon. Not a little...a lot.

    Any thoughts?

Could it be mulberry? Never scored any myself, but I hear it can stain your hands orange when “green.”

Is it heavy? If so, could be mulberry.

All of the mulberry I’ve cut was bright yellow inside and then turned the color of a beet once exposed to the sun. Can we get a picture of a standing tree?

Almost looks like what buckthorn looks like inside but I normally don't see any that big.

I was going to say buckthorn too! We have some where we camp that are 15 ft tall and probably 6 inch diameter. Have read it is a poisonous dark purple berry, and smoke can be mildly irritating/allergen when burned. The one I messed with just under the bark had an orangish look and true to name had little thorns.

Third vote for buckthorn. They don't get too big around here because I cut down every one I see. Nasty little trees. But it is good hard and heavy firewood.

I'm not sure buckthorn grows that far north.

The wood and sap wood sure looks like black cherry to me.. The bark on your one picture makes me second guess my cherry ID...

I was just checking on one of the tree I.D sites and did not find anything with a range that far north. Just goes to show what bird poop can do!

I've got it in the Northern part of Dakotah Territory and north and cold don't seem to be an issue here.

Here's what I was looking at:
    Virginia Tech Dendrology Fact Sheet
Like I said, it's amazing what a little bird poop can do!

I had a slight inclination to think it could be buckthorn too. With all the guesses on that I'm going to go with that! Thanks for the responses! To the other folks who responded it's range, that is correct it's not supposed to be here. It's an invasive species. Some nearby villages require you to cut and destroy buckthorn. To Horkn, yes it is heavy wood. Very dense grain. It actually burns pretty good though. I use a lot of it for kindling since it's all over my woods and most are small.
