Time will be a premium this year so had to get an early start on splitting. Started on all that oak I got last year. Got a cord split and stacked today. It will be a minimum of 2 years, maybe 3 before I get around to needing it.
I usually have 15 split cords on hand by the end of fall. I use 5-6 cords per year so 3 years is feasible.
With the tennis balls over the posts I can pull the tarps over the side and put weighted gallon jugs on each grommet to keep the tarps on with out ripping the tarp on the posts.
Trouble is when you get to a round that had a 16”-18” limb growing from it. Usually results in quite a few chunks of “uglies” that go into the chunk bin. Those uglies sure give a long burn time with that dense wood, they just suck for stacking. Love them on those really cold nights.
Started splitting the second cord of red oak today. Where these houses are now I remember a farm in that area when I was a kid. Found this today splitting, it was about 6”-8” deep from the bark. That’s a 5 gallon bucket bottom for size reference.
