Counts as a scrounge because it's not off my own property, and is free. Friends of our family are clearing a section of their property so their daughter can have a horse at home. Probably about half an acre by the time it's done. They contacted me and asked if I wanted the wood. I said sure, what do you need me to do? They said, show up and we'll help you load pieces in your truck. Now, their son is 19 and a great kid, very polite and respectful, but is struggling with proper chainsaw use because I don't think he's been correctly taught. He's doing all the cutting but is slow, and his technique is sketchy at best. None of the pieces are the same length - it's like a bad tree service job. I get a text message once a week saying that they have a load ready. I finally asked them if they would like some help dropping and bucking the trees and they jumped all over that idea. So I'm heading over (3 miles or so) with my equipment this weekend, going to drop as many as they want me to, get a few more loads on the pile.

This is what I have so far, it's roughly 2-1/2 cords of a mix of cottonwood and ash. All the bigger stuff is ash, the smaller stuff is about 50-50 mix. There's some butternut, box elder and cherry in there, but every tree is less than 30 years old. The big score is that there are at least another 8-10 cords of wood that they have marked for cutting. I'm hauling it home one load at a time. I may borrow a dump trailer if I can find one for the weekend, that would make the job so much faster.

Sounds like a great score to me, have you volunteer to teach their son a new skill set?

Yes teach the lad the proper use of a Chainsaw, PPE and how to drop and buck a tree.

Nice score and absolutely opportunity knocks. Teach him the way and he’ll craft and hone the skills. Maybe even help you on future scrounges or at least it may come in handy for him!

When I saw the name of the thread I wondered why anyone would scrounge a semi? Hum...

Good opportunity to get wood and help a friend in more than one way.

Sounds great and I am sure the son will appreciate you teaching him the correct way.

Cotton wood and Ash, a great combo! Cotton wood for quick hot starts and Ash for longer burns.
