Nice pictures! I’m really close to having a 5100s back in action. Bought it blown up, disassembled in a box.

50 year old saw still running with the pack... I still use this saw 5 days a week & it runs like the day I purchased it. 32 to 1 mix always use premium & a freshly ground chain when it's IMG_0189 (1).JPG IMG_0137 - Copy (2).JPG not cutting right.

What mill is that ? I just ordered one and waiting impatiently for it to arrive.
If you have any tips and want to PM to me so as not to hijack this thread that would be great. It's something I have always wanted and will be a new chapter for me.

All done. Fired up and running great. Doesn’t seem to be oiling the chain. Will have to look at that.

Got the oiling system squared away and put it back together. B/C aren’t too pure, lack of oil I’m sure. Anyway here it is. 24” bar seems like plenty, thinking about a 20” tsumara lite for it 169B145C-C4BC-4119-B26C-33A7F3A503E8.jpeg 082E9106-2127-45D1-BE8A-1A5CB0AE1D12.jpeg 1B802E03-3512-44C7-B131-F098C07C9C24.jpeg I really like the raised XP emblem on the top cover

Go with 20": better speed and torque, faster sharpening, less bar maintenance ( you do file, reverse, and clean the bar after sharpening ? ), less weight, less fatigue.
Now the "longuns" will rant ( you NEED a long bar, you need a long bar , if you don't have a + 28" bar, who are you boy ? ).

Mine wears a 20, even after porting. I'm sure it could run a 24 but I have bigger cc for that. Also, my oil pump was stingy. If you are not getting 1:1 with mix and bar oil, you can mod the pump to increase flow. Awesome saws they are. 56.5cc and 4.4hp.

Hope to get it into some cottonwood logs on Saturday and see what it’ll do. Tried doing some tuning with it in a vice. Not sure if it is as good as it could be, a little boggy coming off idle. I’m not great at saw tuning. Really like the auto tune on my 562

Here's my first Stihl. Just put the 25" ES Light bar on it. Notice anything "weird"?

Other than the fancy handle bars on there, I don't notice anything and I have a 391 with a ES 25" on it. I'm definitely jealous of the LIGHT bar. Mine really perked up a bunch with a MM.

    391MM stock output.jpg
Stock output hole is tiny. This was not letting it breathe well. Originally I had the louvers cut and opened up so the exhaust went down... Bad Pizza... If you do the louvers set them up so the exhaust goes up. I've never had an issue with fumes from it, but pushing the hot exhaust down was bad when against a log the heat was going right down on the oil tank...

    391MMlouvers.jpg
Again set the louvers so they blow up instead of down. This mod with resetting the carb for a good tune really woke my 391 up a lot. Down and dirty mod didn't cost anything and no welding. Dremel with a cut-off wheel did the trick. Always remove the Hi jet limiter on the carb and tune it as soon as you do a MM.
