Paying job i did today felling a twin cherry and a red cedar for a regular customer. Couldve used Tarzan with all the vines. Worst ive ever worked in.
Red cedar was a leaner with a serious vine tangle at the top. Bucked a couple sections off the bottom and pulled it down little by little. Honestly didnt think id get it free. IMG_2054.JPG
    IMG_2056.JPG IMG_2057.JPG IMG_2058.JPG
Ill save sections for now for some future project. IMG_2055.JPG
Then attacked the cherries. Freed up the trunks, cleared escape route, pulled down broken top. IMG_2051.JPG IMG_2052.JPG IMG_2053.JPG
4" vine...biggest ive ever seen. IMG_2060.JPG IMG_2059.JPG First tree had a nice lean but was concerned with vines into adjacent tree. Notch, back cut and down she goes right where i wanted. Been a while since ive felled a tree. Good adrenaline rush. IMG_2062.JPG
Few vines still into second tree. Dropped it perpendicular to the other. Two on the ground with no problems. IMG_2061.JPG
    IMG_2063.JPG
Bucked the second tree and loaded the rounds. He said i didnt have to take them and was going to leave the first as it fell in to a brush pile but the wood was decent and it wasnt too bad to get it out. The hoarder in me couldnt leave good wood behind. Brush made a nice cushion for me to buck. IMG_2065.JPG IMG_2067.JPG
    Some decent wood. IMG_2068.JPG

Be safe working my fellow hoarders, after all its a jungle out there!

Kill those vines! Kill those vines! Kill those vines! is the Ohio forester's chant I hear whenever he pulls in our drive... LOL Not too many vines left alive on our property.

I've only ever had the pleasure of cutting one cedar tree that had died over by the original farmhouse. The wife wanted it cut into 3" thick cookies so she could have one or two in each of our closets in the house. Next thing I know we're hauling cookies to everyone in the family, all her friends in her garden clubs (yes, plural), and all her friends in her quilting club. I was known by all the ladies in 3 towns as the "Cedar King"... LOL It does smell pretty good and supposedly keeps certain bugs away.

I know you like cedar, you've bought lots of cull at HD. Maybe you can tie this piece into a woodshed somehow. If not, it makes very classy kindling, or maybe swedish torches for Christmas gifts!?
Good you don't have to clean up those vines! Were they bittersweet?

It looks like Bittersweet, worse than the plague. I hate it with a vengence.

the cedar is still in 5-6' logs at the guys house. Too nice to make kindling. Fellow FHC member lives close by just got a mill so these may be his first run. The cherry yes it would have, but no way to mill on site as it was hilly.

Kudzu is the vine that swallowed the south.

Bittersweet is the vine that swallowed the northeast, and possibly the whole north. I despise the stuff.

I share your misery with vines. What is covered under them usually makes it all good in the end. We are loaded back here with years of it left unchecked.

I have a bunch cut to stove length, just because it causes so much more work.

Cutting amongst those vines reminds me of one time I was cutting an ash but it was in some thick stuff. To make matters worse, the vines, mostly grape, made it really tough. Ended up getting what I could but most of the top stayed up there. I said let it dangle and it did for a long time until another bigger tree fell and took most of the mess down.

3 red pines and an aspen under this mess.

    20200319_153744.jpg

This area has larger vines up into the trees.

I might just go out and clean this up a bit. It is pretty lousy out. Northeast wind off the ocean and drizzling.

I had a grape vine trip me the other day sawing a box elder up.

It got cut into about 20 pieces after that. This was only 3/4" in diameter, but it grabbed my foot pretty good and if I wasn't as agile as I am, I would've been on the ground.
