I had a very nice penpal in England for a decade (RIP Lynn), and she moved to a different flat 3 times in that period because one or two neighbors "burning" wet wood. For whatever reasons there because her weather the wet wood smolder smoke would hover low instead of floating away, the block reeked, the hallways to flat doors reeked from tenants going in and out the main door all day and more. She had a serious lung condition (autoimmune) so it wasn't healthy for her, what bothered her most was it irritated and her eyes and nose, and smell of that wet wood smoke was always in her clothes and hair and even her couch in her flat. She went outside and took a picture of her new mobility scooter, I could literally see the smoke on the ground where scooter was parked. Ick!

D959F6BD-CE17-4BC8-BF29-48BCC7C7FB43.jpeg I love the smell outside but then I’m not I’ll . Depending on the wind you can smell it at the end of the street . I hate mine if it gets to the smouldering state . If it gets real windy it has blown down the chimney , twice and set the monoxide detector off

CHECK YOURS NOW IV MENTIONED IT

so based on that damp is useless and so is winding the air down too much . Live pic

No Worries on burning seasoned, dry wood, personally I have a pleasant association to that smell, being warm and content, but wet wood smoke does not smell good to me. Do you know why the smoke around her sat on the ground instead of floating away?

Iv never seen that happen on a calm day any smoke from mine goes straight up .
So I can only assume the soot makes it heavier than air and it sinks . I try and keep a load inside ready for the next day .
A mix containing pine which dries in no time I think would sort out the odd piece if it wasn’t 100% 481E4E8D-4E30-4DE5-BF20-2651C2BC4312.jpeg

My post came off wrong, sorry, she was fine with wood heat, grew up with it, but after she got sick and into more affordable housing she just had a run of bad luck living near some that did burn wet wood.
