I've been slacking for a while but bucked a pile of mixed logs yesterday. There is some maple, red oak, white oak, locust, holly and sour wood in the pile along with a little pine. 20200307_154921.jpg 20200307_154905.jpg am a little soar this morning..... guess I let myself get out of hoarding shape over the winter.

I'd take that pile for a dollar. Some great BTU's there and I hear you about getting out of shape, although round is a shape. hehe.

    What is sour wood?

I've been a little soar at times but usually by morning I've back down to earth.  But I have been sore many mornings. :hair:

Sour wood is a local name.... its technically chestnut, but the blight deforms ("soured" as it has been explained to me by the locals) the tree and they generally don't live long enough to produce nuts. (some do) I've never seen one bigger than 12 inches alive and they are always twisted up like something out of a horror film. The exception to that rule is a local research station here that has a stand of healthy trees and they have a 7/8's hybred chestnut stand(still young) that is possibly completely resistant.
Its okay firewood.... a little better than tulip poplar and pine but not much. Its not safe for open indoor fireplaces because it pops hot coals regularly. I have an outdoor boiler so I use a lot of it.
I certainly can't attest to the accuracy of any of this, but I do have a live tree that has produced chestnuts twice in the last 4 years.... so??? Maybe its accurate.
