Doc said his kidneys failed. He hasn't eaten anything he shouldn't have.
We didn't want to put him through any more pain. We explored all options. Nothing would have worked according to all of the vets.

    They figured it was heredetary.

I called the breeder where we got him from and lvm asking if any other pups from that litter or the mom's other litters had kidney issues.

Thinking it through, after Tully and Phelps litter (William's), the breeder had 3 failed litters with Tully as the mom. She stopped trying to breed Tully after that.

Maybe something to that? We followed the breeder health guarantee even the waiting 2 years to have him fixed for the health guarantee.

William was the dark blue collar pup.

1738 days on this Earth. 4.8 years. Far too few.

I thank you all for all of the kind words, from the bottom of my broken heart.

Ugggh, that sucks, so sorry! Take solace in knowing that you gave him a great life, he was a lucky pup to have had such great human partners.

Like I said before, I don't think it was possible for William to have had a better life!

I'm so terribly sorry to hear about the loss of your companion. Same thing happened to our Beagle and I felt totally lost. Our thoughts are with your family. I'm sure he's cuddling with your father now.

I had to read that poem again, my eyes got teary both because Horkn has shared so much about about his dogs though I've never met them I fell in love with them, and also because his Belle was a Brittany (your avatar). I looked away from the computer to compose myself and I kid you not, our cat locked eyes with me from across the room and ran over and jumped in my lap and waited til I composed myself. I swear this kitty was saying it's okay, don't be sad, they are across the Rainbow Bridge and William and Belle are having a blast together til you meet again a long time from now Mr and Mrs Horkn and Badger.

Sorry Horkn to hear this. Wish I could say something to take you and your wifes pain away.

Sad to see this Horkn, one of the hardest things we could ever do. My black lab is 14 and his body is failing fast this winter, I’m dreading the day. Mans best friend is more than that, they are a huge part of us. Just remember you did the respectable thing as much as it sucks.

    So terribly hard to read.
Way too young to lose a trusted companion.

So very sorry for your loss.

So sorry Horkn, really am. I remember the pictures over the years and am so sad to see this.

Something I try to remind others of is something I truly believe, when a young girl asked the reverend Billy Graham if she would see her beloved dog in Heaven. He said if it'll make you happier, then yes.

From the archives the first day you brought him home.

Glad he got to experience the dog chapel. It's a wonderful place for our furry friends.

It’s a tough read after you lose a pet. I went through 6 months with a young Brittany being sick. My vet sent me that in the mail after it was all said and done. You know it’s tough when the vet cries when the deed is being done,

R.I.P. William. Losing one's most loyal friend and companion is always very hard to cope with.

Thanks for all of the condolences. Today is a little better, but not much to be honest.

They say time heals all wounds, but it's really hard to think of how this can get any better at this point.

To us, our dogs are our children. We understand that this is flawed logic, and sure to end with more pain and heartache than if we had children. One way we counter that is by doing everything we can with them, for as long as we can, and plan on the long lives that we typically get to spend in their company. The shortness of Williams life is the troubling thing to us.
