Went to a little antique store today with the wife. Saw a couple cool tools. Only got a couple pics. I think I was weirding out the owner. 20200229_105341.jpg 20200229_105427.jpg

Them some pretty steep prices! I’ve been looking for a 2 man saw for awhile, but I’m not overpaying that much!

I've been thinking about buying a new 2 man saw. I think they run around $250. Would be nice exercise occasionally. Anybody using one?

Doesn’t look like a felling axe by any means but I didn’t want to be “that guy”

Its a mortise axe.....used for both fine paring/cleanup & rough chopping out the waste between bored holes in split rail fences, round posts, large mortises used in timber frame construction for old barns, bridges, cathedrals, log cabins etc.Quite useful even today.

Like countless other styles of axes through the centuries there's usually slight differences in the shape between local/regional makers, either the village blacksmith or from the 18th century onwards ''modern'' factories with several employees for more production.

Larger one is a New Old Stock made by unknown West German forge for Frog Tool Company in Chicago, bought it in early 90's,has 30 inch European Ash handle. It was several years old when I got it going by the W German stamp - East & West Germany were reunited in 1990 after the Berlin Wall came down.

Smaller one is mid-late 1800's American model, most of these were made by local blacksmith, very few had maker's marks. This one has a W Beatty Chester PA stamp, its from a more well known maker.

Not really, thistle set everyone straight. I didn’t know what exactly it was but I knew what it wasn’t.

I wasn't sure either. I always thought ours were ice axes.
