Sounds somewhat similar to an odor problem we had here.
Ended up being a composting facility about two miles SW.
None of the neighbors around the facility complained about the smell because apparently the heat rising off the compost piles carried the smell straight up over the treetops ( and over the immediate neighbor's houses) , caught the SW prevailing winds which carried it further away before being pushed down to stink up an area downwind.

Smelled like pigchit mixed with rotting lawn clippings. Rotting lawn clippings (with nothing else mixed in) smell bad enough on their own.

If anyone lives remotely close to a paper factory, they may be able to sympathize. farmer steve can attest, as can James Miller , when the wind blows the right direction we can smell Glatfelter paper plant in Spring Grove. I don’t mind the smell at all but it gags most people.

I get the paper factory smell as well at times. I think they need to put The Wood Wolverine on the Odor Investigation Task Force. :D

Spent many days in Paper Mills when I worked for Westvaco...I can agree they stink pretty bad. But truthfully I don't think I have ever smelled anything more putrid than the Perdue Chicken Plant on the Eastern Shore of Virginia!

26 years on a printing press, my sniffer is kinda muted from all the chemicals. I don’t think I’d be the best candidate for the job. My better half on the other hand...

Yes, paper mills have distinct smells, some worse than others.

We had a big paper mill to the west of us, then a poultry facility to the north of us, and over east a big cattle yard. One time we were doing some ditch work around the poultry ''barns'' took the trucks to the shop that weekend, and left them inside for the whole weekend. I guess it was B A D!! ha,ha, We were on the mechanics ''list'' for that month. ha,ha.

Now hold up..... red oak, composting, paper mills... these things have nothing on fish plants.
When my folks lived near Reedville, VA, there were two plants that cooked down menhaden and bunker for fertilizer and cat food.
    Horrible.
    Puke face.
    Gag worthy for sure.
Made paper mills smell like roses.
In fact, a shop in Reedville sold tee shirts that said “Bring your girl to Reedville and kiss her where it stinks!”
    :rofl: :lol::salute:

I heard of an old coal mine crack (fissure?) leaking stinky stuff. And in the last decade before the drought was over some favorite lakes/ponds Canadian Geese returned to every year were overwhelmed with goose poops, holy cow that icky too. I'm interested to hear what the cause is, industry or natural :sherlock: Could it be a farmers manure compost pile was flooded and now it's rotting?

When I was a kid, down the street was a mink farm. They used to get the fish scraps from the fish processing plant(s) when the cat food buyers rejected them because they were too rotten even for cat food. Rotting fish in a dumpster in the sun on a hot sunny Summer day is one of the worst smells ever. Paper mills can be pretty bad too though The only one I'm familiar with is the West Rock plant in Panama City, Fl., just across East Bay from Tyndall AFB.

I'll agree, fish plants are pretty nasty, I always end up in them first stop if the day too, so I stink all day. Know what is right up there though for horrible smells? Of all the places I've been in 12 years of visiting, of workong in warehouses or manufacturing facilities, I would rank Yankee Candles the number two worst smelling warehouse.
