Was cutting at my locust quest score today. I was bucking the last group of logs, had them on the "ground" which was a matted mess of twigs and overgrowth so i wasnt being too mindful of it. This was buried in the debris and i hit it, enough to get to the steel belting! Unbelievable! Had to brush it off the see what it was as it was that buried. IMG_1926.JPG
To add insult to injury, i had hit dirt encrusted bark and had to give a good field sharpening prior. Then cut through a skinny round that had frozen dirt under the bark and had to sharpen all over again. Not a good day for the chain! Didnt have spare (chain that is) with me.

    Sharp chain? What’s that...?

That sucks, Brad. What are the odds of hitting that one spot?? Seems like every time I sharpen my chains or toss a new one on, it’s not long until something unseen screws things up. I try hard to avoid hitting anything. But the rocks around here have it out for me.

To be honest, until you hit that steel cord, the rubber was softer than the locust.

I have one...I like it...its great for inexperienced hand filers...but if you can already hand file a chain its not a big breakthrough.
I like it because it files the rakers at the same time...so for me, I use it...sometimes.
I wish you didn't have to buy a different one for each file size though...

Snagged a piece of barbed wire the other day. Cutting a small sapling low to the ground in my trail. Running at low very low RPM. While it was buried in the wood I caught a piece hanging out and buried in the leaves.
Lucked out big time. Couldn’t find one damaged tooth. Still running that chain.

Don't forget to rotate your tires.

Thats funny. The 16" bar on the 261 is from my old 290 and the paint is so worn i forget to flip it sometimes.

I have the same type, but the Husqvarna brand. I like them because you can always get the correct angle on the tooth because the square bars line up with the groove in the top of the tooth. I take the raker file out except for about every 4th of 5th filing.

Found a tire grown into a tree once, but haven't hit one yet lol. I've got the file n joint for 3/8 chain & find it handy for a quick touch up in the field.

When I was grinding it, found out parts of the nail was still stuck to a few cutters. 0214201104.jpg
But they cleaned up good. 0214201159.jpg

Nothing surprises me anymore. Sometimes I think that I have a metal detector that cuts wood.

I feel your pain, been there, done that, especially last summer at our daughters. She had some oaks removed, most had metal some place, i posted my ''treasures'' on one of the other posting. She's got some more to have taken down this summer, so, i'd better get my chains in shape, i can hear that ''death rattle'' when you hit metal, brrrrrrrrrr
