My wife and I hiked about 3.5 miles today in the woods near our place in Southern VT. The snowshoes helped! Came across a stand of these trees in the middle of a bunch of pines. Have a feeling this area was all pasture back in the day. Let me know your thoughts on what this could be: Pics of the woods and a field: Cellar Hole: I find myself enjoying time in the woods. It’s fun to look around and imagine how things were back in the day. It’s also great to get away and explore the area with my better half. Big bark flakes for cherry, but growing all crooked like that sure grew like cherry does around here.
That is how the black cherry grows in my woods. Not straight enough for a saw log so up the chimney it goes!
I have a lot of old civilization around my area in the woods. Very common to find a few cherry trees still living near the foundations.

Looks like it was a beautiful day for a hike out in the woods with tons of interesting things to view and consider. That tree looks like black cherry to me. I used to hike a lot myself. Lately I’ve discovered that there is nothing quite like a slow and purposeless meander through the woods to stare and observe and find interesting things you wouldn’t otherwise see. I often do the same and try to think about what the landscape used to look like before the forests came back in. These videos here are pretty great for learning about how to read the New England landscape to try and determine what it used to look like and be used for. Really interesting stuff.
Thanks guys! And I agree with the suggestion on Tom Wessels videos. I've watched that entire series. I used the compass on my phone yesterday to try to figure out why type of storm may have blown down a few downed trees we came across. The stuff you can learn by just looking around. I have a tree identification book and looked up black cherry. The bark looks similar, but the one I pictured has more flakiness to it...if that makes any sense! When I go to the description page, it says it can become scaly. A cool find in the middle of the woods! Wish I took a pic of a few of the big old trees that we walked passed.
Skier76 that is a long ways to walk on snowshoes! Now you should be in good enough shape to play softball wearing those things! As for the cherry, that is a good one and yes, most cherry trees seem to have a problem growing straight. One thing we like about them is the fruit that is great for deer. Of course turkeys find them too as do coons.
LOL! We slept well that night! It turned into a longer hike than we thought. We took a different route heading back...then when we got to the Class IV road we were heading to, we opted to walk back via our club's snowmobile trail...further extending the distance. Then we went skiing on Sunday and wondered why our legs were tired after just a few runs. I think we forgot how much effort it takes to walk in snowshoes! Edit: We saw a ton of deer tracks and a bunch of fresh turkey tracks.
