How do y'all store or carry spare chains with you? I have a tote bag that I carry, has files, a few tools and spare chains in it. After awhile, the boxes look like this and the chains are loose in the bag. So I had a ...found these small plastic lure boxes in Sporting dept at Wal-Mart for $1.98 each. Bought 4 to try out. Used my multi-tool to remove the dividers. Even holds the chain for the biggest bar I have. Now, I can carry a spare chain for each saw/ bar in the bag... Also have a better way to send my square grinds to dall for truing up/ sharpening when they get in bad shape..
Glad you started this thread! I almost did it a Little while back when buZZsaw BRAD & I were talking about tool boxes and spare chains. So here’s what I use. Plastic sandwich boxes from a dollar store. All my 18” chains are .325 x 50. everything else Is 3/8 x 50 so the boxes are only marked by bar length in inches. 3 saws usually go to the field with me wearing 18” 20” 28” bars with chains on em. Plus a 24” bar rides in the saw box. Chain box is a plastic box looks like something James Bond would have handcuffed to his wrist. Also has screeches, toothbrushes, and other sundrys. 3 extra 18”s, 2 20”s, 3 24”s & 2 28”s Each container has a piece of cardboard underneath the chain that is red on one side. When a dull chain is put back in the box the cardboard goes on top, red side up. When all boxes get “red side up” it’s time to head to the grinder
I have a metal toolbox that I keep my saw stuff in. I have a chain or two loose in it. I like the ideas though.
I have my toolbox that goes with me 95% of the time when cutting. Extra chains are in ziploc baggies. I use to keep them in the top compartment of the toorlbox, but it will leak when raining and they pop open sometimes when i open the toolbox. I dont have extra chains for the 28 & 36" bars for the 460. Most of the time ill field sharpen when cutting. I used to rotate two chains when cutting but have gotten out of that habit for some reason.
Same as SandHillBilly ! Except my containers are Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Cinderella. I keep my chains in an oily rag. I also have a roll-up tool pouch with everything I need. It all gets tossed in my square Husqvarna Saw box
The plastic containers new chains used to come in worked good for awhile. Still have a couple, now its all paper.
I inquired about environmentally friendly bar oil a couple years ago. Too expensive. Stihl or Husky makes it.
The one with the 261 chain in it is an old Oregon chain box. Popular gift for me was an Oregon L67 chain for my saw. It was easy to keep track of chains when i used one size bar and chain! Funny as im really liking running the 261 with the 16" bar.
I have a plastic tool box much like the one Buzz Saw Brad has . It has a few tools ,wedges , first aid kit ,and zip lock bags with extra chain for the saws I will be using that day .
I use original chain boxes. I still have a few of the plastic ones. I have so many of them laying around y’all would laugh at me.
I have in the past struggled with this. It has gotten worse as I have switched to Jonsered saws away from my Stihls. I appreciate the ideas and will be incorporating this into my saw bag. Currently I have an old 4 wheel drive Dodge that I hang my sharp chains on the clothes hanger hook in the back window, dull chains get thrown on the back floor boards (4 dr truck).
This is the box ,etc.. I pretty much try to have the things I may need on hand in that box. Nothing worse than being in the woods and needing something simple ,and not having it .
