Ok gang, were 2/3 through the winter, whats your burn tally out of curiosity? I'm so light it's ridiculas. I just past 1-1/2 cord for the winter so far. I'm normally at about 3 cord. I've only had a handful of "below freezing" days. Are any of you way down on burning amounts? Dave
I think I’m closing on at about 2 cord(hard to tally this up in reality). I have to keep in mind that I’ve burned a lot of cedar kindling and a lot of pallet wood as well in the beginning because it was a fireplace to begin with, now with an insert, the wood isn’t going so fast. I’m using about the half amount of wood in a reload for a fireplace for just about every 6 hours of burn time in the wood burning insert.
Less than usual, given the warm Temps all season. I'm guessing about 2 cords. About a cord less than past years. No complaints though.
not much that’s for sure. Maybe 2/3 cord of pine and ailanthus. Another maybe 1/2 cord of chunks. Very little of the good stuff.
Am about right with ya WeldrDave am somewhere around 1 1/2 cords. This winter so far has been working well for me because I was a little light to begin with so am hoping to carry some over into next year's winter.
I've burned all the shoulder season wood that was dry, probably a cord of that. I've just started to pull from the shed. Before that I was burning various racks full that were in the way. The basement is still stuffed with oak. So about 2 cords burned in total.
Started off with a cord + of red maple, a half cord of pine , about 1/3 cord of spruce and 1/4 cord of oak. The oak is gone. The pine is gone. The spruce I've put a little dent in and there's not quite 1/4 cord of maple left. We've gone thru 2.5 cord of oak in the past, so a very light year. Not much HHO either.
Maybe 6-1/2 cords so far, since 21 October. Outdoor wood boiler eats the wood but it heats 4300 sf of house, 800 sf of garage and 100% of hot water. So, pretty much normal for the winter.
It predates my joining FHC. Never took pictures of it going up. I do have pictures of the back yard from Feb. 2015, I'll try and find them.
WeldrDave , I am about the same rate you report. Dividing my css effort between next year and refilling the woodshed. Most woodshed stuff is older dead ash. I have a rick of wood from last season left, that is in reserve for restarting if I need to let the boiler die out. whatever remains of it will go to the tree farm, as that fireplace is I tlerant of up dry wood. I figure I will burn through March. Indiana high school basketball sectional season is always nasty and cold. I feel cheat that we haven’t had a good Arctic blast this year. I feel so smug when I am toasty warm on those days.
I don’t have a history of consumption in this house because this is our first year burning. We have gone thru 2 cords so far. I have one cord left in the basement all between 15 - 18 %. That should get us to April I hope.
Never kept track before this year. Probably closing in on 3 1/2 cords. Been a fairly mild winter, but I think I’m burning more than in the past just because I have it & don’t have to be so stingy with it. I should make it through the season easily with good dry stuff. Plus if next years isn’t already in the stacks, it’s in rounds waiting to be split. It’s really nice being ahead (not 3 years yet, but gaining)! Thanks for teaching me a better way
Yikes. I'm tired of thinking about processing 6+ cord of wood every year I've only burned about 1.5 cords. This Winter been like an extended Fall here
Yes and just knowing you have wood on the back burner "just in case" is a good feeling. Over the years I can be safe saying I go through 4 cord. Some years more some less, this year has been really light. I keep 12 cord on hand at any given time, mostly. Right now I have about 6 cord of 4 year old Oak Has a moisture content of about 10% or less. I'm "trying' to burn up what I have because some of this will be no good come next winter. I have 5 and 6 year old Maple and Cherry in the box now. The bugs are enjoying it now more than me!
I like to replenish my patio stack, so it's hard for me to determine events how much I've used, this year and past year's too. If I had to guess, it's maybe 2.5 cords so far this year used. That might be a little high of an estimate, but considering that I plan on using 5 cord a year, and where we are at in the season, I think that usage is down from past year's. Also we upgraded windows, insulation, and properly vented attic, so I would expect more efficiency, not even factoring in a winter that hasn't been like last year. Now, I will say that last year's winter was cold, but what was way worse was that spring was not warm, and it took seemingly forever for the temps to warm up last Spring. I just recall that last year was the latest I've ever pulled my boat out of storage. At like the 3rd of June or right about there. Granted we were busy with the house updates, but the temps were cold enough that using the boat was out of the question in May because of the crap Spring we had.
