I am glad you took her to the vet. Sometimes some of those quills are logged into their mouth and can be missed. Is this the first time for her to get into it with a porky? We have porky's here, however Molly has kept her distance. She got close to a skunk once, but didn't get a direct hit. All in all, a fairly docile dog.
Didn't see the Dad save but Mom was at the house and she was very large. The odd time I have to call him twice but for the most part he does what he is told/asked on the first call already.
Maple seems ok. Still walking around whining, so she's probably still uncomfortable. There is a culvert pipe where the dogs are always sniffing, so this is the porcupines den. I saw fresh poo with quills at the entrance. I looked inside with a light and it's deep inside, so I'll be able to get it tonight hopefully. Saplings were chewed along the road, so it's been hanging around all winter.
one thing after another for poor maple it's so sad to see the quills in her face ,kill that thing if you can there is no closed season in nh on porkys ,woodchucks or coyotes so you dont even need to be sneaky about it
All my Hounds have been quilled at least once. In addition, I've done some avoidance training with them with both dead and live Porkys. I'm pretty confident that three of the Hounds would leave a live Porky alone if they came across one on the ground in the woods, the other two Hounds I'm not so sure about. They will all alert to one in a tree though. I've dispatched 12, all on our 43 acres since we moved here 15 months ago. I keep a very close eye on them, and don't let them chase anything when they are out and it's dark.
When your dogs were being de-quilled.... they were put under? The vet used a narcotic like shot on Maple. She's getting there, but not herself just yet. She had distemper booster and rabies last night while under. We already had an appt for Monday. Maybe the shots she got is still bothering her??
Yep, a shot to put them out, and then a reversal shot, they are usually pretty dopey for a day or so afterward. They are usually a bit down the day after yearly vacs as well, so it sounds like she's got a double whammy going on. GLWT porky tonight. I've heard they are not bad eating. I haven't tried because I've only used a shot gun at relatively close range, so they were a bit messy.
I setup a trap. Went out twice armed, but he's way back in the culvert and the other end is buried. Apples and rock salt should hopefully bring it out and into the trap.
Couple foot cable attached to that re-bar,Large 3 prong hook, some bark and salt in an onion bag Brian. Keep Maple in house tonight and go to bed.
This is Monkey, she’s our cat dog, she loves to fetch! Second pic is her and her sister kitty, Mia. They are double trouble! (don’t tell Nick I “let the cat outta the bag” but he spoils them more than I do! lol) ~Lissa
