As a kid we've all dreamed of traveling to distant planets. but is it possible to live there? could we live on mars or even beyond mars? do you think its possible to find another earth to live on? as many know we live in the "Goldylocks Zone" meaning the earth is just the right size and shape and distance from the sun to support life. There are ppl looking to move off of this sphere. (or flat plate, for those flat earthers)
    Occupy Mars

while I certainly don't agree with everything bill nye says, he is a popular persona. He is sceptical. Bill Nye’s 5 reasons we can’t live on Mars

what do you think? could man live on mars? or another planet?

Apparently, living on Mars is not within the realm of reality since we aren't on the metric system in the U.S.!!!! :p

There are no trees on Mars even if our chainsaws would run with little or no atmosphere! No...Not moving to Mars!

that's only because it would cost far too many Canadian pesos to convert to metric furlongs. I'll stick to measuring in handbreaths.

Well... if folks decide to head off to Mars someday, I'd wonder when the regret would kick in... when they first touch down or when they realize there's no 5G on Mars, and those tweets are gonna take up to 22 minutes before they can send selfies... ;):D

You don't have to volunteer them, just convince them they have free health care, free tuition, free room and board, free safe spaces and they'll fall all over themselves to be first in line.

Let me be perfectly clear, I wouldn't know anything about that.

There are many obstacles to living on Mars, air to breath, water, food, protection from radiation, temperature, etc... Even though all of these can be remediated, the resources required would be great. And if they were resolved you would have to live in some form of shell or dome. Going for a walk "outside" would require donning a self contained portable protection suit.

On the other hand there are planets in the "Goldilocks Zones" around other stars. The three closest are:

Proxima Centauri b 4.22 ly (light years)
    Gliese 667 Cc 23.62 ly
    Kepler-442b 1291.6 ly

These three are in the zone estimated to be comparable to Earth's zone relative to their stars. Most modern space craft travel about 5 miles per second so each light year would take about 37,000 years. That means the closet Goldilocks planet would be about 160,000 years away. That is radically longer than modern humans have existed on Earth. Even if we can quadruple the speed of our spacecraft, which is not yet technically feasible, it would take 40,000 years. And once we get there there is no guarantee that the planet would be habitable. Just because it is in the right zone does not mean that it developed the same way as Earth. Additionally it took a couple of billion years for earth to develop the means to support life and the sun's life expectancy is only a couple of billion more. We may get there to find either an infant planet or a dead rock...

We better try to keep this one habitable until we overcome the technical difficulties of exploring interstellar space.
