So a while back I posted about the pretty sizable ash score at a friends house nearby. This one here - Can’t wait to get over there with the splitter this spring and start hauling back loads of wood. Anyways, hiding behind their shed there was a pretty good size trunk that I ignored because it was on a steep little hill being held up only by a couple small hemlocks. Haven’t thought much about it since I finished cutting everything else there. Well this afternoon I got home and something motivated me and I decided it is against the hoarders code to leave that beautiful length of wood laying there. I went over there with the 391 and started to analyze the situation. The pictures don’t do it any justice but it was enough of an incline that safety was a concern if the thing decided to go. The angles to come at the cuts from above the log weren’t ideal. It just felt off. I was able to get it safely cut in half and then manhandled the downhill section into a safer position, letting gravity and my LogOx do most of the work. From there it was easier sailing. The 391 cut right through both sections, yielding me ten 18” long rounds. From there, the question became, “which way do I haul these out...? Up or down?” My truck was only about 10 yards away but it was up the steep incline. Again, picture does it no justice. Every piece would have been a fight to haul it up. So down we go... The only issue with going down? I’m 20 yards from the road and a drainage ditch with steep sides and filled with 6” of water and a thin row a pricker vines stands in the way. Using the LogOx again I was able to drag each round over to a clear path and send them rolling down to the ditch. From the ditch it was still a haul through the prickers and down a slight slight snow covered hill. Took some extra time but I finally got them all loaded in. About half way through hauling from the ditch a good bud of mine who’s an officer pulled up behind my truck. Lights flashing. Thought I’d be explaining myself but was glad to see it was him. He stayed and gave me safety lights for 10 minutes as I finished loading which was nice. State road that isn’t too greatly traveled but cars go flying along that stretch. Lot of work for 10 rounds of ash. It’s all worth it though. The scrounge pile grows... ... and the work pace is slowed greatly when you have dogs that can’t ignore sticks and chunks of wood.
Awesome pics and story!!!! Love the dog too!!! some hoards are easier than others.. but in the end they keep you warm at least twice!!
Nice score bud! Can’t imagine what would happen if we lived closer. Probably put a GPS tracker on the Aspudlh trucks haha
Most people that have never worked for a tree service would never understand what you've done. I am liking the FHC more and more everyday. What you did was work and that's to be respected.
Ha! I just posted a thread about our wood hound. He does make the job take a bit longer but he's fun to have around.
The things we go through as hoarders for a good score. I wouldve done the same! Nice score and gettin it sir!
